A special reality
In slogging through (so you don't have to!) Jerry Johnston's column on filmmaker Richard Dutcher in the new Dnews MormonTimes, I was struck by a glaring omission. In his pontification, Johnston never gets around to mentioning that Dutcher has left the LDS Church.
I mean, why is a column on Dutcher's new film "Falling" in the MormonTimes in the first place? Because he is/was the foremost Mormon filmmaker.
Is word of high-profile Mormons "going inactive" from the LDS Church barred from MormonTimes? Even the DNews movie critic Jeff Vice mentioned Dutcher's defection in his review.
Most discussions of Dutcher's new film, explore his spiritual change of heart. The blog FilmStew: "Like (director) Neil LaBute before him, filmmaker Richard Dutcher has decided it’s easier to practice his art beyond the boundaries set by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."
(The photo above would indicate that a cold beer also helps Dutcher in practicing his art.)
Of course, Jerry probably believes it's only a matter of time before Dutcher is recaptured by the church's tractor beam and dragged back into the fold.
