Tell your children

The word "hero" gets tossed around so often these days that we need to come up with another word for people who courageously stand up for what is right.

I suggest "librarian."

Even when you know your principles are solid, it's tough to tell a bully, especially when he's also your boss, to stuff it.

Jeanne Layton, a true librarian, has died at 77.

In 1979, Davis County Commissioners ordered Layton to pull Don DeLillo's Americana from the shelves because they deemed it "obscene." Layton, said no. When they threatened to fire her, she said no. When they fired her, she took them to court and kicked butt.

''It's not the library's role to determine choices for adults,'' Layton said. ''It's important for the library to serve everyone in the community, not just select groups.''

Not words that would look great carved in marble at the Davis County Library. I wish she had said something like "Nuts." Or "I have not yet begun to fight, you weasels.
"

But then, she was a librarian.
