Patriotism, Utah style!
For a state chock full of Bush-lovin' "patriots," Utahns sure know how to avoid stepping up when the nation's biscuits are in the fire.
The Trib's Matt LaPlante reports Utah's per capita participation in the Army fell nearly 20 percent last year, "continuing the Beehive State's status as a place that ranks among the bottom of contributors to the active-duty Army. "
Only North Dakota and Washington, D.C., enlisted fewer soldiers into the Ar
my in 2007.
Maybe, we should call it "The Romney Effect" after Utah's favorite presidential candidate. Romney supports the president and the Iraq War, but his kids (like Bush's) don't deign to put on a uniform.
Romney to reporters that his five sons are serving their country, "by getting me elected."

Are you a veteran yourself? If you are, then you have standing to comment critically on whether or not someone else volunteers. If you are not a veteran, keep your mouth shut. I speak as a non-draft influenced Navy veteran.
Salt, I don't agree with you. I'm a draft influenced Air Force Vet and 20 year Retiree. Utah men don't enlist Active Duty because their church comes first, family second, country and everthing else last. A sad statement for such a Hawkish Red State.
PS. My draft number was 54 in September 1970. I voluntarily enlisted in the USAF instead of allowing myself to be drafted into the Army.
Interestingly, candidate John McCain and his wife, Cindy, have two children serving in Iraq.
