What else do cops have to do?
In another consistent inconsistency at the state Legislature, a bill that would prohibit smoking in a vehicle carrying a child is gathering momentum.

It's not surprising that Sen. Scott McCoy, a Salt Lake Democrat, is sponsoring the proposal for the second year.

What is surprising is that Sen. Chris Buttars, who likes to believe he's an individual-rights guy, is supporting it. Buttars is anti-matter to McCoy's matter, and the idea that they would join forces makes me fear for the time-space continuum.

Will a Legislature that is loathe to pass a seatbelt requirement for children, outlaw smoking in a citizen's own rolling castle? Sure, why not?

Apparently, here's how it would work: Cop pulls perp over for some infraction. Cop sees cigarette in perp's mouth. Cop determines that a kid is aboard in a car seat. Cop adds on an additional $45 fine (that can be waived if the perp enrolls in a smoking-cessation program.)

Meth dealer looks on in horror, changes his ways and gets certified as a chemistry teacher, alleviating Utah's educator shortage.
