Estevez checks out Chip Ward
City Weekly's blog reports that actor/filmmaker Emilio Estevez and a retired Salt Lake City librarian are joining creative forces to produce a motion picture.

As odd as that might sound, Torrey resident Chip Ward — he's also a noted environ
mental writer — is going to see an article he wrote turned into a motion picture. The essay, first published in Tom Dispatch.com describes how public libraries became sanctuaries for the homeless as social services funding declined. Ward's piece later turned up in the LA Times and on NPR.

Estevez (Bobby) hopes to build a drama of the lives of library denizens based on Ward's article.
The Hollywood Reporter describes Ward/Estevez's The Public, as a "social drama":
The story, set in Los Angeles, takes place during a 48-hour period on the two coldest days in the city, with the library overwhelmed by people seeking shelter. After getting rebuffed by the administration to keep the doors open, one librarian stages an act of civil disobedience. He ends up dealing with the library's new inhabitants, many of them mentally ill.

Or you can live it this weekend, at Salt Lake City's Downtown Library.
