The self-made multi-millionaire gave himself $35 million of the $90 million his campaign has raised, according to campaign finance reports.
In fact, Mitt Romney loaned his campaign twice ($18 million) what it raised from other sources in the final quarter last year.
And the money is going out as fast as it came in — mainly to Tsunami Tuesday ads, in which Romney is trying to position himself as the "true conservative." The campaign has bought $1 million in spots in California alone. Romney calls the true-conservative approach his "best weapon in a battle to the finish" against Sen. John McCain, whose independent streak bugs some mainstream Republicans.
On the personal front, the AP reports Mitt seems to be opening up about his Mormonism. He can afford it now because Super Duper Tuesday, with two dozen states holding primaries, dilutes the power of born-again Christians, many of whom think Mitt is not a Christian, says the AP. "Contests in Iowa and South Carolina, which both have significant evangelical voting blocs, are behind him."
