Vive la France!
In his speech ending his campaign for president, Mitt Romney made a, how do you say... tres gauche comment about France.
Laurent Lechifflart of Saint-Vallier, a Franco-Mormon letter writer, calls our attention to it: "It is bad manners to speak evil of a country that granted him hospitality for two years while he was a missionary."
For the
record, Mitt said:
Left, France's new first lady Carla Bruni.

For the
record, Mitt said:I am convinced that unless America changes course, we will become the France of the 21st century... still a great nation, but no longer the leader of the world, no longer the superpower. And to me, that is unthinkable.Comedic political pundit John Stewart also was disturbed by Mitt's France comment. "Isn't France the France of the 21st Century?" Stewart also refers to Mitt as "a salt-and -pepper man-shaped polymer case for a spiritual vacuum." It's a commentary worth seeing.

This is silly, Glen. You know as well as anyone that Mitt's reference to France was an intentional nod to the extreme conservative right who demonized the French as part of their drum beating for war against Iraq. As a cheap political tool, members of CPAC paint the image of France as a country governed with liberal cowards and Romney was quite clearly citing the reference to illustrate that he believes the same.
