Cook runs, again
Merrill Cook, former congressman and sometime Republican, says he's going to take on Democrat Congressman Jim Matheson.A little history: In 2000, Cook — who over the years has run for virtually every office in Utah, except mayor of Guitar City — lost his precious congressional seat after two terms when Derek Smith took him down in the Republican primary. Matheson then knocked off Smith. Office-hungry Cook has dropped his GOP label on occasion, always losing.
It apparently has never dawned on him since that blowing off Utah's Republican Party is never a good idea. When Cook most recently rejoined the GOP in 2006 to challenge Congressman Chris Cannon, he was eliminated at the state Republican convention.
Cook has lost a ton of weight (not literally, but close) and seems more sane than during his last term in Congress, but the legend of loopy vindictiveness remains. Add to that his unfortunate history of double-crossing the GOP and you've got a perennial Utah candidate with big problems.
In his announcement yesterday, Cook declared, yet again, that Utah Republicans are ready for an "independent-minded Republican."
Sorry, Merrill, they've already got one. His name is Matheson.

Sorry, Merrill, they've already got one. His name is Matheson." Tru'dat!, as the kids say today. I've given up writing Matheson letters asking why his lips are so firmly planted on Mr. 19% approval's butt; all I ever got back were "dear citizen, blah blah blah who cares what you think blah blah blah." I really hope that some of the momentum the Dems seem to be generating can be harnessed to get a real Democrat, as opposed to a Bush-boot-licker like Matheson, to run for that office. I'm hoping for Jenny Wilson, I'd sure as heck campaign for her. As for Merrill Cook vs Matheson, as you say, what's the dif?
