Deseret Morning Nukes
Jennifer Killpack-Knutsen who blogs on Jen's Green Journal makes a compelling argument that Deseret News top editor Joe Cannon has yet another conflict. Most readers know that former lobbyist Joe Cannon is the brother of Congressman Chris and is also the former head of the Utah GOP party.Killpack-Knutsen refers to the DNews' recent front-page poll story: “Utahns back nuclear power,” that indicated a "strong majority," 57 percent, of Utahns "favor nuclear power as part of Utah’s energy mix."
Killpack-Knutsen argues that the paper failed to mention, or "deliberately omits," that this is its third poll on nuclear power and results have varied from 63 percent of Utahns favoring nukes to only 38 percent, after voters first learned state energy policy committee heads Reps. Aaron Tilton and Mike Noel have financial stakes in building reactors in Utah.
DNews polls have also found that much stronger majorities of Utahns support solar, wind and geothermal power.
Joe Cannon has strong ties to the nuclear industry, Killpack-Knutsen quotes HEAL Utah information:
Between 2005 and 2006, Mr. Cannon was paid $150,000 by EnergySolutions to lobby in Washington, DC. And five years ago, he and EnergySolutions CEO Steve Creamer plotted an effort to hijack the Goshutes' nuclear storage proposal with "Plan B," which would have had the state build and operate a high-level nuclear storage site near Canyonlands National Park.
Killpack-Knutsen doesn't mention Joe's Jan.27 opinion column, "U.S. has great need for nuclear power," in which he acknowledges "representing" energy clients.
Meanwhile, the Tribune reports that Tilton's nuke company has made it to the federal government's nuclear license to-do list.
The reactor's name, "Blue Castle Generation Project," reports the Trib's Judy Fahys, has people guessing the site is near Blue Castle Butte on the southern edge of the Book Cliffs near Green River.

I'd love to take credit for all the facts on Cannon - but I can't. Most of that praticular post I was quoting a HEAL Utah email that I received. Just wanted to give credit where it's due.
Thanks!
