Leaving America
In a reverse of the immigration story Americans are conditioned to expect, Tribune columnist Rebecca Walsh reports the Talovic family is returning to its native Bosnia. America is no longer a haven from violence and hate. It's the last chapter in a tragedy that began when their teen-aged son, Sulejman Talovic, bought a handgun and a shotgun.
Sulejman used the weapons to kill five shoppers at Trolley Square a year ago, before police gunned him down.
A legacy of grief and physical recovery, of course, remains for the Trolley Square victims and the Talovics. The final report on the massacre came out last month, but offered no closure as to what had triggered Sulejman's rampage.
Sulejman's father Suljo, above, said at his son's funeral:
"There are no words to describe how saddened I am, and how great the people of Salt Lake City are."
