Stunning win
Jared Massey of Vernal got $40,000 in a settlement with the state of Utah and became a worldwide YouTube star for getting Tasered by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper.

Massey posted video of the UHP trooper Jon Gardner zapping him on the side of the highway on YouTube. The shocking footage has been viewed more than 1.7 million times.

In the video, Massey, right, falls screaming in pain after being electrocuted by Gardner, who taunts, "Hurts, doesn't it?" Massey was zapped a second time for not obeying an order to roll over on his stomach quickly enough. An internal UHP investigation cleared the trooper.

Assistant Attorney General Scott Cheney says, "Trooper Gardner acted reasonably to avert a volatile and potentially dangerous confrontation on the side of a busy highway." But, "We recognize, however, that this is a close case."

1.7 million hits! I foresee a show biz career ahead for Gardner, his Taser and Massey with a lightbulb in his mouth.

He should have held out for more. And been allowed to taser the officer.

From the Tribune comment board on the story, "I'd rather the State spent a million dollars to fight it if necessary."

Wow. Apparently the well informed commentator doesn't understand by "State" he really means "tax payers."

Who knows what the outcome would have been. I think it was wise for the State to settle now before attorney fees go through the roof.

Good for him. The trooper was out of line. On the tape the trooper lies to the superior about what he said to Massey. He says he warned Massey he would taser him when no such warning was given.

I am sorry that they settled. The UHP puts their life on the line everyday and so for acting like an arrogant spoiled brat the state of Utah paid Jared $40,000.00. I hope he chokes on every dollar. I can see him with a career in TV. "Cops" keep it up because you can only reach higher Jared!! "Bad boy, bad boy whatchagona do when they come for you"

If the idiot had only obeyed the officer in the first place, none of this would have happened. How was the officer to know that Jared wasn't about to get confrontational when he left his truck and wouldn't heed the officer's orders. He got what he deserved.

There is a very fine line between a crook and a cop. The amount of force nesesary to defuse the situation or restraining ones self from using excessive force was not excersized at all. There was excessive force used along with taunting the arrestee.. Where do they teach police officers to act like this? Its not in the handbook ANYWHERE!
