Maese: the third option
I got an email from S. Steven Maese on a recent item I posted about Kelly Ann Booth's run for Roz McGee's state House seat. Maese, who up until recently was engaged to Booth, is the former owner of an escort service and faces charges of running a prostitution ring. Here are Maese's comments:
I’m sure that calling me a pimp and calling Kelly Ann Booth stupid, or dishonest, or both passes as witty banter in your circles; but even someone as ridiculed as I am is revolted by such classless and disparaging remarks.

I bet it’s nice to be the smartest person in the room, never having erred.
The “diehard reporter” in you should realize that this is a smear story with no probative value. As stated “Kelly Ann Booth is not accused of any wrongdoing.”

So the third option that you should be voicing is: She’s a caring and trusting individual, not jaded enough to be a legislator.
I’m sure you complain just like everyone else that we can’t get decent and selfless people to represent the public interest. You’re right, the state would be much better served by a Johnny-come-lately trial lawyers association president that wants to line the pockets of his profession.

It would be nice if you used your blog to illuminate instead of just to snipe.

Good points, especially for a pimp.

But seriously, why would anyone consider running for office in this state if they know they are going to be set up for public ridicule by the likes of Warchol, Rolly, Walsh, and the Tribune editorial board.

It would be nice to see someone give these folks a taste of their own medicine. I think the pimp dude should look into this.

Perhaps Mr. Maese is correct. Perhaps ad hominem attacks do shed more heat than light.

But perhaps Mr. Maese could answer a couple of questions. Why didn't he mention to Ms. Booth that he had been arrested on felony charges before he proposed to her? Or that he owned an escort service? Did he say anything about either of these issues when Ms. Booth decided to run for the legislature (one assumes that they discussed the matter prior to her entering the race)? Why did he wait so long to break the news to her? Most of the damage to her campaign and reputation is his fault, when it comes right down to it.

If Mr. Maese truly cares about Ms. Booth's well-being, and her political career, as his email would indicate, he has a funny way of showing it.

I was actually touched by Maese's sincerity. Having been a bad-boy myself before I met my wife I am troubled by the negative press Booth has recieved.

Maybe the story should continue. Maybe we should know why Maese didn't reveal his past to Ms. Booth. Maybe there is something more that we are missing.

Nice to see that Maese is blaming Kelly Ann's opponent instead of himself.

Aren't those who lie and point fingers the one's who have three pointing back at themselves?

This is merely an attempt by Maese to try and sway people into buying his lines. And moreover its an attempt by Kelly Ann, an immature political activist who's plans for elected office and political domination have been foiled.

That's funny, maybe Maese should be a comedian instead of running an escort service.

Let's take a look at his comment "johnny-come-lately trial lawyer association president."

Maese, your fiancee is a TRIAL LAWYER, or at least she was. She went on to different positions because she didn't want to fight for individuals who were wronged by big corporations, healthcare providers, doctors, or injured by faulty products.

And, as a resident of District 28, I would HARDLY call Kelly Ann's opponent "johnny-come-lately" as he's lived in the district for almost as long as Kelly Ann has been alive.

Steve, check yourself, and check your ego at the door...the public has a right to know what their elected officials do, who they associate with and who their family is. It goes to their character, their judgment and their decision making, and you and Kelly Ann made bad decisions. Don't go shifting your burdens and your guilt onto other people.

Frankly, as a voter, I would like to have someone who knows the law representing me, someone who knows and has fought some of the biggest corporations after they've swindled employees out of healthcare or pensions, someone who has a set of values that protect people, not exploit them like you have done.

I'm confused, aren't candidates required to file by a specific deadline? How does a candidate enter late? Aren't their rules about this? or is Maese just confirming the rumor that Kelly Ann moved into the district 10 days before the six months required of living in the district because she was a plant by insider democrats for the seat.

If Kelly Ann thinks she's entitled to the seat she is a true politician already and we might as well join her in spitting on democracy and the constitution.

Grow up Stevie boy. Is that the same sweet talk you used to talk underage girls into prostituting for you?

Kelly Ann made a calculated risk to run for public office with a pimp for a fiance. She knew his background -- Steve knows it, Kelly Ann knows it, and anybody else who has a mind knows it. She gambled and she lost.

It's called public office for a reason -- if you can't stand the public criticism, then stay out of public office. Once you throw your hat into the ring for public office though, you should expect to be scrutinized. And, it is appropriate to scrutinize those who run for public office. Sure everybody makes mistakes, but some are more serious than others. When you are running for an office of trust and responsibility, you should be judged by your decision-making skills -- both your good choices and bad choices. Being engaged to a [alleged] pimp (and money launderer) is a extremely bad choice. Appearing with him while running for public office is a bad choice. Having him run your political campaign and advise you politically is also a seriously bad choice. Making an implausible denial that she had no idea about her fiance's background, as Warchol states, either shows her incredible stupidity or her lying ways -- another bad choice.

These aren't personal attacks -- these are issues that reflect Kelly Ann's ability to hold an office of trust and responsibility. Clearly, her response (and Steve's response) is to point the finger at everybody else instead of come clean and accept responsibility. Sounds like just the type of politician we do NOT need.

I too feel sorry for Kelly Ann. She was foolish enough to think her finance's garbage would not come out before convention and that Maese would be exonerated before the general election. (He is going to JAIL, three of the prostitutes flipped on him. It's public record.)

Either way, I agree since Maese knew Kelly Ann wanted to hold public office, he could not have loved her as this email suggests and failed to tell her he was accused of running a prostitution ring.

So Warchol is right again, either Kelly Ann is stupid or a liar. I'm leaning towards liar.

It is amazing how blind love can be. The public doesn't honestly know how this situation came about. Steve could have covered this up for their entire relationship. As you can see from his message, he must be articulate and very thoughtful with his words and actions. I have no doubt that he had thought everything out before starting this escort business and before getting engaged to a politician.

It may have been very naive of Kelly Ann to not question Steve about his past or even, say, do a Google search on him. In that case "fool me once, shame on you."

On the other hand, maybe she did know. Maybe her family told her not to do it. Perhaps she thought that it wouldn't matter at all until it was too late. In that case, I'm concerned about how she could possibly be swept away by lobbyists and ignore what the people of her district may really need.

Either way, the engagement is called off. Supposedly it's been called off for a few weeks...that's even before the Deseret News, The Tribune, or any other media outlets here outed this information about Steve's friendship with the prosecutor. We'll never know for sure what Kelly Ann knew and what she didn't know.

Maese, if your reading this from your jail cell...GET REAL.

Ya know, they say you can put lipstick on a pig, but lemme tell ya, this pig needs a whole makeover.

Wow what a bad bad guy. He is smart and articulate. It's just sad that he didn't go to highs chool and then college so he could have put some better use to his knowledge and skills. I'm not surprised he ended up in crime and pimping. The real victims are his family and everyone that has been dooped by him. Kelly Ann must have known. She just wanted to turn a blind eye while he 'rico suaved' her...Well anyway hopefully justice will prevail!

He is a high school and college grad. Being smart and making choices (however calculated) sometimes do not go hand in hand.

He isn't a college grad. Just another one of his many lies. Kelly Ann knew about his charges, she has even been to where he does his pimping.

Actually, he's a high school drop out. Got his GED in his late twenties.
