Shurtleff for polygamy czar?
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid phoned Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff today to "kiss and make up," following Reid's attack on Utah and Arizona law enforcement for failing to take action against polygamous groups.

In a KUER Radio West interview, Reid praised Texas' raid on the FLDS compound in Eldorado — saying it is what Utah and Arizona have failed to do for decades. Reid, a Nevada Democrat and LDS Church member, criticized Utah and Arizona law enforcement for cowering before the polygamists' political clout.

Republican Shurtleff and Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, a Democrat, were outraged and immediately fired back, saying Reid did not know what he was talking about.

This morning Reid called the ruffled AGs to set up a meeting between them and the U.S. Justice Department. Says Shurtleff:
He called to say, 'Let's kiss and make up. We have the same goal and that's to get more federal involvement.
The men discussed creating a federal task force to investigate polygamous sects.

Federal scrutiny of polygamists could be coming from another quarter as well, as Rep. Kay Granger, R-Tex., presses the U.S. House Armed Services Committee to look into a $1.2 million federal contract awarded to an FLDS-controlled company.

The WE tv cable channel will air an episode of "Secret Lives of Women" series, profiling women who escaped from the FLDS sect. The Chicago Tribune's TV critic says this about the documentary:
This is one case in which the facts may be even scarier and more dramatic than what’s been conveyed in the mainstream media coverage of the FLDS affair.

It was classic to hear Shurtleff say on the TV news last night "Harry Reid is full of crap"

I know! Our yokel state reps--embarrassing. I'm on board with Harry Reid. Utah (I'm not as familiar with Arizona) sat on its hands and couldn't make a serious move against FLDS child abusers. Now they're trying to grab all the media attention they can while Texas is doing just fine without them. As usual, the Utah Republicans want to blast any involvement by the feds, until they want its money. Watch.

It was classic to hear Shurtleff say the arrest of Jeffs in Nevada proves they are the ones with a "polygamy problem".

If Mark was doing his job why wasn't the arrest made in Utah?

Arizona has tried, on and off, to do something about the sect on the AZ side, but I always got the impression that without Utah (and, by default, the mainstream LDS church) - AZ knew it couldn't go it alone...

With all the problems, all the crime, with this nation almost crumbling and harry reid does not seem to have enough to do..Either that or he is damned embarrassed.
He cannot stand the fact that polygamy stems from mormonism. So his solution, wipe all 30,000 polygamists off the earth. Whether put in jail or killed that will amount to tens of thousands of martyrs. So be it. My grandfather and father went to prison for their beliefs and it did not stop them or I would not be here.

If I have to go down in history as a mother who went to jail because she wanted to marry a good man who already had a wife, to have him father my children also then so be it. I've been able to raise beautiful children that can be upright citizens in society. If I and many like me have to go to prison to seal our conviction, if that's what it takes then that's what I'll do. Plural marriage is a saving tenant of our religion. We do not believe in marrying children to old men but we do believe in polygamy. So if harry reid wants to attack us then he will find there are thousands of us that will have to be put in prison before we give up our religion.
