Campaign hi-jinks
Just in time for Tuesday's primary, The Trib used a government records request to pry loose a smokin' email that indicates that Mark Walker, indeed, did offer Richard Ellis a lucrative job if he would drop out of the state treasurer's race.

Walker, a lackluster Sandy lawmaker, right, and Ellis, a deputy in the treasurer's office, have turned what is normally a yawn of a GOP primary contest into a pot boiler.

Carl Empey, vice-president of public finance for Zions Bank, wrote Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert:
Mr. Walker came up and visited with me on many occasions and discussed the idea, the salary amount and asked me to pass it along to Mr. Ellis for his consideration.
Such shenanigans are illegal even in Utah. Repubican Herbert, who suffers from a rare form of paralysis when confronted by dubious deeds of GOP candidates, refuses to make a determination on the incident until after Tuesday's primary.

I don't understand how you are using "pot boiler" here. A potboiler is usually an artistic work, such as a story or novel, that is trite and written quickly.

Do you mean this issue is trite? That it seems like it comes from a potboiler detective novel?

Or do you mean that it is a "hot topic."

Cmon Glen. Empey's claims have been known from the start. This email is nothing new.

Don't forget, Empey gave money to Ellis and his campaign.

It would also be cool if you mentioned why the Lt. Gov didn't want to make a decision until after the Primary, but, you know, you and Cathy are slanting this story so hard towards Ellis it makes the media coverage of Obama look downright mean.

JeffJames,

Are you saying Walker is a complete idiot? He knew of Empey and Ellis's long-standing relationship. That's why he approached Empey. Walker is only acting like Empey is a rabid Ellis supporter now that Empey is telling the truth. You see, with most of our fearless leaders, the truth is of secondary importance, particularly when one of your buddies might get taken down.

As smelly as this whole thing looks now, I have the feeling it's going to get a lot more smelly. We can all know of Walker's ultimate stupidity, if only we will be patient. I almost hope he wins on Tuesday so the full investigation goes forward. If he loses I bet that's the last we hear of it.

I thought the email showed Empey offered Ellis is job and a raise. Nice to see Empey engaging in corruption with an office that he does business with.

How's that slogan for Zions Bank? "We haven't forgotten who keeps us in business -- Ellis and the state treasurer's office."
