Cannon blitz
Wow. Our semi-sane Congressman Chris Cannon is sure a busy guy. The frenzy of press releases and emails ooozing out of his office has jumped off the charts, including this announcement that Cannon is sponsoring legislation to let President Bush to bypass pesky regulations to squeeze oil out of shale ASAP. Cannon's district, of course, sits on top of huge shale reserves. And, in case we forgot, his press secretary, notes:Congressman Cannon has been a leader in oil shale development before it became a crisis. The only crisis Cannon has on his mind is the approaching primary election, in which Jason Chaffetz in is poised to dump Utah's zany congressman.
No one has yet come up with a commercially viable way to extract oil from shale. Maybe it's time to focus on ways to extract energy from incumbent House and Senate members.

Many are getting close. See this article from CNN:

To be clear, we're not at 100% certainty. However, we aren't 100% with ethanol or hydrogen either.
But with prices at an all-time high, the "economic feasibility" argument gets more outdated by the day.
Sorry. I didn't realize the URL would be cut off. So here is a TinyURL version:

I don't know if this is part of a 'bliz' or anything necessarily. I know this isn't new stuff for Cannon he's been talking about oil shale for a very long time. I did see something (via Utah Policy) from the Richfield Reaper about a town hall energy meeting Cannon held in Sevier a few weeks ago.
I'm probably not as cynical as some, but it seems like a timely thing to do given the price of gas right now. Would you rather have a congressman not do anything just because its election time?
The only thing more cynical than the headline of the article about oil shale is this blog.
I don't know what Cannon did to offend any/all the staff at the Trib but he must have done something because I have never seen an article or blog from the Trib that's not slanted against him.
I AM GLAD SOMEONE IS DOING SOMETHING ABOUT GAS PRICES! I only wish the rest of the Utah delegation would follow Cannon's lead and pursue alternative forms of energy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, Cannon seems to be really paying attention. He refutes Warchol's theory at his blog:
http://tinyurl.com/5sapoo
actually, I'm sure it's his paid staff paying attention, hoping they'll still have jobs in January. It's really the only piece with any type of significance Cannon's sponsored. The timing just can't be coincidence . . .
Chaffetz has my vote - Cannon's not the only who has been talking about oil shale - or other energy possibilities for that matter. Jason's been consistent on the issues and guess what - he actually LISTENS to folks.
Apparently only Cannon supporters comment on this blog. Interesting since they complain so much about the Trib. Didn't know ya'll were still reading. This is typcial Cannon and the reason he must go. He'll put his name on anything to get elected. He had the gall to argue that his work with Geneva Steel had a positive impact on Utah County at the recent Republican Convention. Anyone who lives here knows 20 people forced into early retirement with a bogus pension (as a result of Cannon's position in the Geneva bankruptcy). When will the disengenuity stop?
Too little too late. This legislation would have been nice 4-5 years ago, but eh is just trying to save his political life.
I sure hope Jason Chaffetz beats him on June 24th
Good observations Glen. Cannon only seems to be concerned with his constituents at election time. The rest of the time he is influenced more by his peers in congress. We really need Jason Chaffetz to win this election.
Oh please. Cannon always claims he'll do something when an election is on the line. He doesn't. This is just more of the same. If you've ever had the opportunity to hear Cannon and Chaffetz debate- it's obvious that Cannon is completely outmatched. Cannon will say anything and do anything to stay in office.
And as for the Trib ALWAYS being slanted against him- given that his brother is the Editor-in-Chief of the Des. News it seems rather obvious that publication always soft-peddles his blunders.
Eh. I don't know why I bother to comment on this stuff. The pro-Cannon people are usually just his staff. Cannon has paid people who are in fear of losing their jobs this election who just sit around all day on our dime responding to blogs in a desperate attempt to stay employed and make it look like he's doing a good job for us. One check of Cannon's voting record reveals that he says one thing but does another.
It will waste huge amounts of water for very little. Then we have more ytailings to deal with. When the water is diverted to St. George and the other desert communities where will all this water come from. Same thing with nuclear power it uses huge amounts of water which is then poluted so badly it can't be used for anything else. If they would put better filters on the coal plants and make them cleaner then there wouldn't be such a back lash against them. The technology is already available but the owners of such plants say it is too expensive. Too big of an excuse for me.
Well, we have got to address the energy crisis one way or another. Maybe shale is an option, but we need to explore more than just shale. Jason Chaffetz's take is as follows: "It’s time to unleash innovation, inspire entrepreneurship,
and get government out of the way so our best minds can
solve our nation’s energy crisis. The United States must
adopt a comprehensive energy plan that allows us to develop
our own resources in a timely and responsible manner
without the expensive and restrictive lawsuits. Energy
independence is a national security issue and vital to our
economic future. Energy policy has been ignored by our
nation’s leaders for far too long. This is an issue on
which I intend to spend my political capital in Congress."
Wouldn't you love to have an alternative to $4.00/gallon?
To Dad: The Trib is going to rail against any GOP incumbent. The minute Jason Chaffetz is in office, he'll get the same treatment from the Trib so no need for Mr Cannon to feel like he's getting special treatment here.
Now on to my comment; There's too much politisizing going on and not enough action. If Chris Cannon is re-elected, just watch how quickly he drops the ball here and allows it to fade into oblivion until the next election cycle. Really, we need to be focusing on what we can do as consumers to force the free markets to bend to our will. Those of us who continue to fill our tanks even though it hurts the pocketbook to do so and take our trips to Lake Powell, or Moab, or even just drive to work instead of taking the bus (heaven forbid we become "bus people!") are as much a part of the problem as our politicians are. Let's hurt them in their pocketbooks by greatly reducing our consumption and then and only then will you see prices get down back to where they should be.
