Family feud
The Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (FAIR), which basically defends the LDS church from criticism, created a website parodying a the website of Utah Lighthouse Ministry, run by the long-time church criticizers and all-around-thorn-in-LDS-sides Jerald and Sandra Tanner.I'll bet it was a laugh-a-minute website.
The FAIR site played off the lighthouse motif, but included the words "Destroy, Mislead and Deceive." (chortle) The paradoy site included more than a dozen links to BYU and LDS church websites critical of the Tanners. (snicker) The FAIR site's creator also registered 10 domain names that were based on the Tanner's name, but linked to the FAIR website. (guffaw)
The Tanners sued saying the FAIR site infringed on the copyright and were cybersquatting.
But after four years of squabbling, the 10th Circuit Court upheld a lower court ruling that because FAIR did not use the site to sell anything, but only to goof on Lighthouse Ministry — no problemo.
