From Rhode Island with love...
In Oakley...

Talk about the power of the press. The Tribune's Kathy Stephenson wrote a rapturous article about the Road Island Diner, in advance of its opening last weekend in Oakley.

I drove up to check it out and blog from the 1939 chrome and mahogany beauty
(the diner has historically inaccurate wi-fi) that was transplanted from Rhode Island and restored at a cost of $1 million.

Unfortunately, Stephenson's article triggered a rush of nostalgia addicts on the diner as it embarked on its shake-down cruise.

"We got slammed," said owner
Keith Walker, describing the weekend crowd waiting two-hours for eats. Then the air-conditioning failed pushing the temperature up to 120 degrees. Even diner love has its limits. Consequently, when I arrived today — the breakfast and nostalgia, pictured above, have been replaced by workmen and powertools.

The friendly folks apologized and offered a complimentary fountain drink and wi-fi for my trouble. The Road Island is closed until Wednesday — but I would advise you call first. More information here.

I'm a bit disappointed, but it's a beautiful day and I'm heading on to breakfast, I hope, in Kamas at the Beaver Creek Cafe.

We thank all those that have visited us at the Diner. We have been overwhelmed by the crowds serving over 600 meals a day! I'am are particularily pleased at the response of the "Greatest Generation" folks that have visited us. Their sacrifices were a large reason I decided to undertake the restoration. We believe we have made the adjustments to ensure those that come will have an enjoyable experience. I always considered this project a roadside attraction but the family operating it have served up great, affordable meals with good service. I could'nt have expected more. The Diners hours are Weds-Sun 8:00 Am-9:00 PM. Thanks for your support, Keith Walker,Restorer 435-783-DINR
