GOP buzz: Mitt's the one
Politico reports:
In a surprise to many Republican insiders, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is at the top of the vice presidential prospect list for John McCain. But lack of personal chemistry could derail the pick.
What would make Mitt suddenly go from gum on McCain's shoe to his top choice for running mate? Money can, indeed, buy friends. According to Politico:
One of the chief reasons the Massachusetts governor is looking so attractive is his ability to raise huge amounts of money quickly through his former business partners and from fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons.
A Romney insider says Mitt could bring McCain $50 million-$60 million in 60 days.

But the the blog Stump asks:
If, as expected, McCain stays within the public financing system for the general election, how useful is the money Romney raises?

The tip-off that Politico is just a “promote Romney” piece is that it mentions EVERY NAME in the next two tiers of Veep prospects EXCEPT SARAH PALIN!!! — even names far more unlikely than Palin (since Romney camp knows Palin is the ONLY ONE who tops — I’ll say tops by far — Romney as McCain’s best pick).

Bottom line, Romney and Politico fear Palin most — as do the Dems and the MSM. (By the way, the Dems and MSM do not fear Romney the most — which says a lot.)

Palin doesn't exactly leave me shaking in my boots. She is only half-way through her first term as Alaska's governor. She wouldn't bring a geogrpahic advantage, and Alaska hasn't mattered much politically in some time. She has no other significant executive experience in business, and prior to governor was a mayor/manager of an Alaskan town. Notable, but not on Mitt's level of expertise. I think people see her as aviable republican femal VP candidate, and as much as I would liek to see it, I could see Kay Bailey Hutchinson having far more pull than Palin. Ted, you are just off here.
Sorry Ted, money talks in close elections. I don't see how you can say Palin tops Romney.

Palin's voter base/attraction transcends geography, as does McCain's, Obama's or Hillary's, so Alaska's small size is utterly irrelevent.

All the media buzz which will surround Palin -- essentially free to McCain -- will be worth millions and millions of dollars of PR (more money than Romney could provide anyway).

It appears that it’s all down to Palin or Romney, and team Romney fears Palin now has the best shot, so Romney camp is mounting a blogosphere-wide assault via Politico.

AOL, prime on-line pro-Obama/pro-Dem player, is now carrying the Politico piece promoting Romney buzz.

Clearly AOL wants McCain and the GOP to lose the general elction — hence they gladly promote Romney (no mention of Palin).

Also, CNN had Romney — kind of out of the blue — attacking Obama. Again, CNN, wanting McCain and the GOP to lose, gladly promotes Romney (to attempt to avert the Palin threat).

Finally, I would suggest you read up (google) on Palin's remarkable background, experience, qualifications and accomplishments. She's the most popular governor in the USA 80 to 90%, whereas its very questionable whether Romney would even have won reelection in Massachusetts had he run there.

And finally, compare Palin's 80-90% approval rating, highest of all governors in USA, to Romney, who likely would not have won reelection in Mass. Also, Palin's accompishments, qualifications, experience are wayyyyy more than you suggest. And talk about excitement!

I have to chuckle at the Captain's , I mean "Ted's", suggestion that this is all a conspiracy. Yep, CNN, AOL, Politico, Romney, are all out to get the cute girl from Alaska.

As far as "excitement", the initial reaction to Palin being selected as McCain's running mate would be "wow, she is really cute" and the second reaction would be "I didn't know Alaska had a governor."

80% to 90% approval in Alaska means twelve, maybe thirteen, people like you.

both Palin (inexperience) & Romney (corporate robot) carry unnecessary baggage. This is going to be close, McCain should be non-controversial conservative in his choice

Florida, Minnesota too important for symbolic gestures.

It's the kiss of death if McCain picks your boy. Even to myself I sound racist when I say he's too white for this year's ticket. And the raising money thing? I remember when the same was said about John Edwards. On a gracious day I regard him as a footnote.
