GOP-on-GOP fun
The Utah's Third Congressional District GOP primary campaign may actually turn out to be entertaining.Usually, Rep. Chris Cannon and whatever Republican sap is running against him pledge not to go negative, allowing Cannon to roll on to victory thanks to piles of out-of-state contributions, incumbency and name recognition.
But this year, young-and-hungry Jason Chaffetz is challenging the ol' silver back. In a recent debate, Chaffetz circle Cannon jabbing at his record. None of the attacks were telling, but they nearly drove the old boar, who has some difficulty with basic English, into a rage.
After the mikes were unclipped and red lights off at KUER, the Trib's Robert Gehrke and Bob Bernick of the Deseret News watched Cannon try to get a last couple swipes at his young opponent.
Cannon: Everything you say is a distortion.
Chaffetz (pursuing Cannon out of the studio): Name one thing. I do not want to distort your record, but you tell me a specific and I'll stop saying it's true.
Cannon: ...Horrible guttural sounds and something about "next debate." ...
During the debate, Cannon was able pull enough words together to tag Chaffetz—who does not live in the Third District, saying Chaffetz should be running against Democrat Rep. Jim Matheson, who represents Caffetz's district:
If Jason really wanted the country to move in the right direction he would have taken on Jim Matheson in his own district.Chaffetz slickly sidestepped the question:
I'd like to get rid of both of you if I could.

The funny thing is Chaffetz endorsed Cannon back in the day.
It stinks to live in the 3rd district. I feel like I'm at the school dance and the only 2 people to dance with are the ugly girl and my cousin, either way I'm a loser.
Um...why don't you move?
Warchol, from his glass house, said ...
"the Trib's Robert Geherke (sic) and "
Looks like the Trib's copy editors have also been laid off. Otherwise he would have known how to spell the name of his coworker.
I endorsed Cannon "back in the day" as well. I don't anymore. I like Jason's message, I want CHANGE, I want a Congressman who AT LEAST will reply with form letters to people who contact him and/or his office - it's MUCH more impressive to have an actual response from the person supposedly representing you, though. I'm excited we FINALLY have a viable candidate who is really giving Cannon a run for his (PAC) money.
And yes, it's pretty fun. . . .
I'm sensing a lot of grassroots discontent with incumbent Republicans this year--and there certainly should be, seeing what Dubya has done to our party since 2001 and seeing how many Republican Congresspeople have gladly gone along with him against their own conservative base. Sadly, Cannon has earned a measure of this discontent himself and I hope that we'll hold him to account on June 24th. I'm eager to send some better Republicans to D.C. to represent us and Chaffetz has my full support.
Chaffetz is way better than Cannon. See his web site if you don't think there's a difference. I voted for Cannon at the beginning, too, so I can hardly blame Chaffetz for doing so. But Cannon has betrayed my principles. Chaffetz doesn't have everything completely right, yet, but he IS better than Cannon on EVERYTHING that's important to me. I continue to be shocked at how much discontent there is with Cannon, and yet he keeps getting reelected. Up till now, we haven't really had a very good alternative from the Republican party. This time is different. Chaffetz is a solid opponent. Learn about him. Then go to his web site and volunteer to help. The only other choice is to leave our district in the hands of the good ol' boy network and the lobbyists.
People in my precinct are tired of the same old status quo with Chris Cannon. Jason Chaffetz presents a refreshing change. Personally, I am ready for a change and am voting for Jason. If you want to learn more about his stances on the issues, check out his website http://www.jasonforcongress.com/page/page/5011447.htm
I'm another that endorsed Cannon "back in the day" but is now eager to see Chaffetz replace him. The feeling is widespread among those that follow what is going on in Washington.
While I agree with this article's point about Cannon I think some of the descriptions of Representative Cannon are rude and unnecessary. I'd prefer a more civil tone. We can disagree with Cannon without being juvenile about it. At least most of those making comments are being civil. Thank you for trying to keep it "clean."
