Your brain on birdseed
Sweet begeebus, is there is no escaping the drug plague? What could be more innocent than the Utah bird watchers' BirdTalk network? But there it was — a dope alert posted by a sharp-eyed Morgan County Deputy Christian Peay:
Subject: Be careful with the bird seed
Yesterday I got called to a home where the home owner thought that some marijuana plants was growing in his back yard. It was marijuana and it was growing right below his bird feeders. The only way I could think that marijuana would grow there is that marijuana seeds must have been mixed in with his bird seed. The home owner is a retired judge so I don't think that he would be growing it. I collected the plants and tested them for marijuana and they did test positive.
A single response came from the birding community:
Where'd they get the seed? You know, for "consumer protection"...

It is possible the birds had eaten mj seed from a plant nearby and then while eating from the feeder, they sh** the sh** seeds onto the ground. I mean that's one way regular seeds are transported.

Please please please let those red-eyed chickadees outside my window be a sign of things to come!

low quality bird seed mixes often contain hemp seed. It is supposed to be sterilized though. Birds don't like it much. I'm surprised some sprouted. Might explain why I've seen lots of birds with the munchies and no ambition.

If you or I -- and not a retired judge -- had called the police about those marijuana plants, we'd be looking at least at a misdemeanor possession, if not a felony cultivation, drug charge.

When will this silly War-on-Some- Drugs-that-grow-from-Mother-Earth end?
