As the Mormon Church throws its considerable weight behind a one man-one woman marriage amendment in California, some bloggers are equating the LDS Church's position to its formerly unequivocal belief that African-Americans were not worthy of its priesthood — that Mark of Cain hokum.The church recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of God's straightening the brethren out. The Big Guy says black men can be priests. (Women still can't... but stay tuned.)
Now, in four paragraphs, the new LDS Prophet Tom Monson calls on the church's members to actively oppose same-sex marriage:
The church's teachings and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. . . .
We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to ensure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman,
One can only wonder if 30 years from now the church will soft pedal their overt discrimination in this issue. . . .
Olin Thomas of Affirmation, a gay Mormon support groups says:
One day it will be unfathomable to many outside the church that church members were pointedly urged to discriminate against this group.
This initiative will hurt so many people. Without [gay] marriage, a couple who have been together 30 years could be torn apart at the doorway to the emergency room.
Affirmation leaders are schedules to meet with LDS middle-management officials in August to discuss the church's political and religious approach to homosexuality.
Why bother?
Finally, conservatives are energetically forging a link between same-sex marriage and polygamy and incest:Intellectually there's also nothing wrong with three people marrying each other, or four, five, six … why settle on the arbitrary number two? If adults who love each other happen to be siblings, or parent and child, what justification do the rest of us have to keep them from marrying? I mean, speaking purely logically. Polygamy and incest pass muster just as well as homosexual marriages.

The majority generally gets it right when it comes to moral issues. When are we going to stop letting the minority dictate what is morally acceptable and what is not!

The majority's herd mentality very often gets it wrong, that's why the founders designed a little document called the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES that protects everyone EQUALLY. It is the majority that is trying to dictate discrimination to the minority. Just put yourself in a gay person's shoes and THINK about it...
The difference between race and lifestyle is that race is not a choice. No one chooses to be black or white. That is how we are made. Lifestyle on the otherhand is a choice. Yes we all have inclinations but we learn to control those inclinations that are not compatible with the good of society; homosexuality, and infidelity of any sort.

I am so sick and tired of the Mormon church interjecting themselves into everything - from the liquor laws in the state of Utah to the ban on gay marriage in California. The bottom line is love is a gift and if you find someone you want to spend the rest of your life with who happens to be of the same sex, who cares??? Why are they so threatened by things that really don't affect them at all...they don't drink liquor (or more accurately, aren't supposed to) and gays are not welcome in the church...so stay out of it! Let these people experience the commitment of marriage - they are just as deserving as the straight population. Marriage is - or should be - about love, not body parts.
Being gay is a choice? Why would a gay person would choose to be ridiculed, shunned by family etc. I would think it is more of a choice if that same gay person married because it was the 'expected' thing to do and had an affair on the side.

I live in the midwest. Tom Monson's letter has prompted me to change my travel plans for the summer. What was going to be two weeks of spending a budgeted 4,000 dollars in Utah has changed to a trip to scenic Montana.
I will not spend my money in the Gay Hate State.
I will not spend my money on products made in Utah. Nor will I spend my money on any product made by a corporation owned by the corporation of the president, or where LDS has official seating at the board of directors.
Glen, I ask a favor of you. Can you please put me in contact with someone who can generate a list of companies, services and products generated from Utah and it's big brother, Tom Monson?

If you are going to boycott Utah, you better get rid of a lot of computer software- a lot of it is made here. Don't buy an MP3 player-the flash memory chips for most of them are made in Utah. Don't call your customer service 800 number-Utah is one of the biggest call center locations in the country.
Like to mountain climb? Oops, many of the name brand climbing equipment companies make their gear here in Utah, most notably Black Diamond.
About the only large company left with LDS leaders on it's board of directors is Deseret Book-any their products are aimed directly at LDS readers.
I could go on, but that should assuage your outraged sensibilities for a few minutes.
