DNews disconnects D.C.
In his drive to make the Deseret News "more local and more Mormon," Editor Joe Cannon made the obvious staff cut — laying off his Washington, D.C., correspondent Suzanne Struglinski. Who needs news from so far away?

In an email to friends and family, Struglinski says:
We knew lay offs were coming but we thought I would be safe for a variety of reasons. We were wrong and now I am looking for a new job.
Apparently Joe, a former GOP party hack, has little faith in John McCain being elected president. Still... if McCain chooses Mitt Romney, as many predict, as his running mate. And if McCain is elected president. (Hey, it could happen.) That would mean the highest political office ever for a Mormon. Mitt would be an aging heart beat away from the presidency.

So why cut the Washington correspondent now?

Word on the street has it that Struglinski will be replaced by a true D.C. insider. Yes, soon-to-be-unemployed Congressman Chris Cannon, who apparently has connections at the DNews, will be filing incomprehensible copy from the nation's capital.

Above: One of the Cannon clones, I'm not sure which.

Yeah, the media's so fair and unbiased, and not in the tank for Obama at all...

Yeah why would readers need an on the ground correspondent in our nation's capital, when that space could be devoted to more missionary stories and words of wisdom from Orson Scott Card. Honestly, D.C, is in the outer darkness as far as I'm concerned.

Geneva Steel.
3rd District congressional seat.
Now, the Deseret News.
I do believe the Cannon brothers are the designated carriers of the dread humanis loseri virus.
Or, the Grim Reapers of careers and business.

Poor Suzanne, she was a good writer.
I feel for anyone out of work right now.
Cannon will eventually put the DNews in the ground.

Dear Glen,

I love and respect the Cannons. I don't know how much, if any, of the "word on the street" can be trusted in this instance, but I would rather have us deal with actual deeds than in rumors. And, I would prefer that we treat Joe and Chris as we would like to be treated ourselves.

I have found that it is very easy to demean and ridicule another human being, because I haven't encountered anyone who isn't walking around with a massive target across his or her forehead. That, of course, would include you, me, and all the delightful anonymous commentators out there.

We are all so tender inside. We all get hurt so easily when others are cruel to us. Yet, for some reason, we all seem to employ a kind of moral disconnect wherein we rationalize dishing-out huge doses of pain and humiliation to our neighbor. Apparently, we imagine that they somehow deserve it more than we do.

But, I think we are wrong.

As a society, I hope we can find healthier ways of entertaining ourselves, and more productive ways of making political or social commentary, than by employing scoff and cynicism. The rare people who accomplish this as individuals are the folks I truly respect and admire, and I think such are the hope of our civilization.

Hopefully, more of us will figure out how to be that kind of person. I think a lot of us have it within us, but we just don't try. Maybe we like to think of ourselves as being in the mold of Mark Twain or Will Rogers, but in our current divisive age, the country may need another approach.

What do you think, bud? Am I being too hard you? I don't mean to be, because I think you are a fine person. I am just taking this opportunity to address all of us. I want all of us to think about these things.

Love,
A.W.

Tim,

Yes, this blog is a joke, in an unfunny kind of way.

I've been wondering if Warchol and Rolly are the same people.

Unfortunately, when the Tribune starts going through its layoffs like the D-News, this blog will be toast.
