Lipstick on a pig
Mecham Investments, the folks who turned the beloved heart of Sugar House into Ground Zero, has satisfied a Salt Lake City order to beautify the crater that remains after the redevelopment project pooped out.

Still alleging that someday a magnificent seven-story office/condo/shopping edifice will rise out of his simulated dust bowl, the developer stuck some plants around the edge of the cavity. Locals call it "Sugar Pit."

Salt Lake City spokeswoman Helen Langan says:
The Mecham folks have met every condition and timeline that we had set up.
Alright Ralph! Don't let those developers push you around.

As much as I loved how Rocky Anderson tweaked the self-righteous rethugs on the Hill, and called for King George's impeachment, and generally pissed off every conservatard in the state, I think Rocky really dropped the ball on Sugar House. He let Mecham take what was a thriving local business district and turn it into a hole in the ground. Even if Mecham comes up with the money to finish his grand design, what's it going to be? Strip Mall USA, looking like every other soulless development in the entire country. Rocky should have stopped the guy when he had the chance.
