Out, out, blue stain
Congressman Jim Matheson continues one of the biggest hoaxes ever perpetrated on Utah voters. The immensely popular Second District representative has managed to convince unsuspecting conservative marks that he belongs to the Not-a-Democrat political party.
Investigative reporters have discovered that Matheson is not only a Democrat, but son of storied Democratic governor Scott M. Matheson!
Matheson pulls off his Not-a Democrat dodge by avoiding all association with Dems and their liberal ways. He never puts a tell-tale donkey on his campaign literature, votes with President George Bush every chance he gets and above all, he stays far, far away from Democratic national conventions. Jim missed the last two because he was so darn busy campaigning to stomp his Republican opponents.
In a weak moment, however, Matheson admitted his true party affiliation to the Tribune:
It is what it is. I'm a Democrat. The upcoming Demcratic convention way out in Denver will be historic. The first black candidate ever will be nominated for president. Unfortunately, Jim again can't make. His son is going to begin fourth grade. Says the Not-a-Democrat:
It is kind of an important week to be around.Photo above: A good con is in the details — Matheson's subtle, yet ever present, red tie.

I've been ashamed of J. Matheson for years. I'm sure the only thing keeping him from simply changing openly to an "R" is the fear of Norma Matheson and the rest of the clan disowning him.
Of course, it must be truly strange to visit the Democratic convention and feel like such an outsider.
I mean, if the guy can't be a true, proud Democrat this year of all years, is there any hope for him at all?
Matheson is popular because the Utah MSM never says anything negative about him. Same goes for Corroon and Becker.
I don't belong to the party, but I always vote for Democrats. I have never voted for Matheson and I never will. I simply don't cast a ballot in that race.
He fools no one. He is a Republican in Republican clothing. He loves George Bush and Dick Cheney (because so many Mormon/Republicans love Bush and Cheney).
Like Hatch, Bennett, Cannon and Bishop, he is lazy and among House and Senate colleagues, has gained no respect. No good social legislation, a very lackluster record that reflects his desire to be with Republicans more than Democrats. I think the state Democratic party should kick him out.
Bottom line: Utah's congressional delegation is filled with Republican lazy men who don't care about their constituents. They just keep hanging onto the public tit. They know that in Utah the church-goers will keep re-electing them.
Such a sad state of affairs.
Hey, where is the usual posting from Utah Democratic Party PR man Bill Keshlear when Matheson needs him most?
I've cast a vote for Democrats since my first vote in 1974. I hate Republicans, the party of greed, fear, and hypocrisy, and I spit when I say the name. That said, I stopped voting for Matheson after about the first ten times he voted with Bush and the rubber-stamp rethug congress. The last election I think I voted for the Green Party/Alien/Wookies, whatever. Matheson only keeps the (D) behind his name because he knows that it's the only way he can win in the 2nd CD. The people of the 2nd CD should wake up and get rid of him. Does he think that being so coy about Obama is going to help his constituents if BO and a Democratic majority is elected? I think Jenny Wilson should run against him in a primary; I bet she'd win in a landslide. Wilson For Congress!
I wish we had someone to challenge that wimp Matheson in the primaries. That guy should not be allowed to call himself a Democrat. He voted for the War in Iraq, for the harsh bankruptcy bill, for the federal anti-gay marriage amendment, for the Bush budget on multiple occasions, against bringing troops home from Iraq, and on and on.

Mid-summer news slowdown? Dog days distraction? But Matheson keeps on keepin' on.
Helping Utahns keep their homes, July 10
“Welcome to Utah, one of the new foreclosure capitals of the United States. After years of economic prosperity, Utah now has the country's 10th highest home foreclosure rate.” – Lesley Mitchell, The Salt Lake Tribune
July 23
Congressman Jim Matheson supports for a housing relief bill titled “American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act.” It is designed to shore up the shaky real estate market, which in turn is a major factor in the weakening economy.
July 26
The Senate votes overwhelmingly for final approval of a huge package of legislation that includes an ambitious program to save hundreds of thousands of families from losing their homes to foreclosure.

High gasoline prices, July 20
“In summers past, Britney Visser mostly fixed lunch for her two children at home. But this summer, with gasoline and food prices rising, she's taking them to a Kearns park every day for free, federally funded lunches. The free lunches help offset the cost of the gas her husband needs to drive to work each day.” – Lisa Schencker, The Salt Lake Tribune
June 17 (last month)
Congressman Jim Matheson introduces bill (H.R. 6284, which is expected to become law in the very near future) to ensure that the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission has the same authority to detect, prevent and punish excessive speculation and price manipulation for traders who operate on foreign exchanges, just as the Commission does for U.S. exchanges.
U.S. regulators currently cannot touch oil traders working overseas exchanges. They can "game” the system, driving up the price of oil in excess of what the supply and demand market would dictate.
This could drop the price of a barrel of oil and therefore lower prices at the pump.

Crandall Canyon mine disaster, July 24, 2008
“MSHA cites poor design, anemic oversight in Crandall Canyon disaster” – headline, The Salt Lake Tribune
Oct. 31, 2007 (last year)
Congressman Jim Matheson co-sponsors S-MINER ACT, far-reaching mine safety and health legislation. U.S. House of Representatives passed the legislation. A similar bill awaits Senate approval.
To:Bill Keshlear,
He's still a Republican. His record is very pro-Republican.
By staying from yet another Democratic convention - one that will be historic in nominating a black man - he underscores his loyalty to Bush, Cheney and the church/Republican base that continues to send him to Washington.
By ignoring Obama's nomination, one could make a case for Matheson being a racist.
I urge all Democrats in his district not to cast votes for him. Ignore his name on the ballot.
"because so many Mormon/Republicans love Bush and Cheney"
King - Do us all a favor and stop talking. Why do Mormons always pop up in your ignorant posts? Is there an obsession? A jealousy? A love? Get over yourself - trying to tie all your arguments to the LDS Church just makes you look stupid. We get the point...you hate Mormons...blah blah blah. There, now you can go to bed and look back at a good day's work.
