Passing the hat at the DNews
Every time disaster hits Utah, KSL and the Deseret News in particular, go on ad nauseum about how Utahns reach out to help their beleagured neighbors.

Now, some Deseret News reporters have taken up a collection within the journalism community for former colleagues who were thrown in the street by the LDS Church-owned newspaper. Earlier this month the paper cut 34 employees through buyouts and "involuntary layoffs." Though the paper offered severance packages, apparently the cutback has left some former staffers in tight financial situations.

An email message asks:
[We] are taking up a collection for our friends who have
been involuntarily let go. We will divide the money we collect evenly
among them. Please think about what kind of contribution you can spare
for our friends.
Perhaps the DNews' annual "Santa's Helping Hand" drive can be extended to its own former workers as the paper becomes, in Editor Joe Cannon's words, "more local, more Mormon."

Ugh! Thanks for ruining my morning with the photo of that pasty faced traitorous criminal, Rove. The only time I want to see him again is when he's doing the perp walk into a federal court, to be charged with treason and other high crimes and misdemeanors. Utah should hang its head in shame that we helped gestate such an immoral scumbag.

when the layoffs come to the trib -- and you know they will, just ask the people at every other singleton paper -- will you be so glib and gleeful when opining about your own sorry state of affairs?

hurry and check your circ numbers, glen. they're falling faster

Wish I could say that hands were reached out in the TV world. My husband was kicked to the curb by Channel 2 and only one person ever bothered to call and offer a shoulder, Michelle King.

After almost a year he is still looking for a job. It is amazing that people you think our your friends totally ignore you when something like this happens. I know that the people at ABC 4 probably feel the same way.

Hmmm. Can't the RIFfed DN employees apply for LDS Church welfare? Even if they aren't all Mormon, I'd think the service they offered for so long as church mouthpieces might be worth something toward their longterm security!

I'm getting sick of the D-News posts, Glen. Are folks at the Trib so insecure that you all feel the need to kick the competition while it's down? Put the target back on elected officials where it belongs.

Glen,

Did you ever think that the precursor to being laid off at the Tribune is being assigned to the Mitt Romney Blog beat that twenty people read?

I'm not involved in the Press-Corps here in Utah, but I feel I must address this post by Mr. Warchol.

First of all, Glen, you are perceived (by all of us) as a total bastard for leaking the (email, letter?) on your lame-ass blog. Have you no decency, sir?

You don't.

My second point: Were you, Glen, such a stand-out reporter that you were given the job of being an internet version of Paul "I have no real job" Rolly?

Why were you given this trivial assignment, Glen? Because you were ever a legitimate reporter? Or because someone at Trib HQ felt sorry enough for you to create this joke of a "Blog?"

I'm sorry, Glen, but even the folks at the Trib know that your pathetic reassignment to the paper is as useful as a "google" search.

Next time, Glen, "google" the word "jackass."

Well, since you're not involved in the Utah "press corps" how do you have any knowledge of Warchol's ability or track record? I know Warchol's work and see this blog as a perfect fit for him. He has a long history of reporting skill. BTW, if you didn't want the e-mail published, or didn't expect it to end up online somewhere, why did you send it out? If you are any kind of a reporter, you ought to be a bit wiser about how you disseminate information.

Also, you're reading the blog aren't you? It must have some value for you. What's with all the hate, Mre. Thin-Skinned Outsider?
Outsider.
