Sky falls on Orrin

Sen. Orrin Hatch, in his new role as vice chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, is sowing panic among Republican donors using the specter of a Democratic Senate super majority that would eliminate the possibility of a filibuster.

In a fund raising-gimmick email blast, Hatch asks GOP fat cats for just $7. A buck for every Senate seat up for grabs.

Just imagine what a President Barack Obama -- the most liberal U.S. Senator . . . -- working with an unstoppable 60-seat Democrat majority to implement his agenda would do...

Hatch lists the horrors: skyrocketing taxes, oceans of small biz regulation and more liberal-activist judges on the Supreme Court. (I remember a time when Orrin hoped to be a member of the Supremes and save the Constitution as it hangs by a thread. Boy, are those days over.)

For all of us, there comes a time when the choices are so stark, the risks so great, we have to take a stand.
I think a super majority of either party seems like a bad idea. On the other hand, the thought of Orrin filibustering by singing his greatest hits is truly frightening.

Orrin clutches his pearls as he warns: "Just imagine what a President Barack Obama -- the most liberal U.S. Senator . . . -- working with an unstoppable 60-seat Democrat majority to implement his agenda would do..." Such horrors! Health care, an end to the war, taxing the obscene profits of Exxon et al, stop the rape of the earth, education...sigh! If only.

What is the legal definition of obscene profits? What is the maximum profit margin (as a percent of sales) a company can have before it becomes obscene?

Are you saying that Exxon does not pay taxes right now?

We pay Exxon's taxes, and then some. Ask those ex-Alaskan clams how their home life is going. Oh wait, I said ex-clams.
