The smoke clears
Process this: Riverdale has a police chief who has been stripped of his concealed-firearms instructor license.

In the world's most spectacular show-and-tell, Chief Dave Hansen, who moonlighted teaching concealed-gun permit classes, accidentally shot himself in the leg in May while giving a group of students a memorable lesson in firearm safety.

Interesting follow up question: Can Hansen still pack his service weapon without going through remedial gun safety training? Does he have to keep his bullet in his pocket?

Rep. Curt Oda, a firearms instructor and all around gun nut, pushed for the chief's decertification fearing that ignoring such a blatant screw-up by an instructor would undermine the credibility of Utah's concealed-carry program. Hansen "voluntarily" surrendered his teaching credentials.

Oda attended a recent weapons review board where he noted—this is profound—that the chief had violated "several sacred safety rules" by firing a loaded gun inside a classroom.

UPDATE....
Riverdale City officials reprimanded Hansen:
City Attorney Steve Brooks sent an email:Both Riverdale city and the Weber County Attorney's Office have reviewed the shooting incident that involved Chief Dave Hansen on May 3, 2008. It is the finding of both agencies that there was NO criminal conduct involved in this accidental gun discharge and therefore no resulting criminal charges will be filed. ... No further action will be taken against Chief Hansen.

Speaking of guns and gun violence, I sent Mayor Becker this e-mail note yesterday. I encourage all citizens to do the same. We have got to stop the gang-related killings in Salt Lake city.

Dear Mayor Becker,

The buck stops with you, right? You need to lead a re-newed campaign to rid our city of the scum gangs who are killing our children, each other and making our neighborhoods unsafe and very scary. You and the city council.

The death the other day of a 7-year-old girl cannot be for naught. It must re-ignite a crusade to stop these killings by people who think they can get away with murder.

I think you should stop sending delegates to problems. You need to go there, you need to talk with the child's family, you need to get a hands-on feeling for the danger and fear that permeates our neighborhoods. When will the next child be killed by gangland terrorists? In which neighborhood? You need to ask the questions and you need to find the answers. We are sick, sick beyond words of killings and shootings and stabbings at all times of the day and night.

Can children no longer play in their own yards for fear of being shot?

You sought the office you now hold. Do your job and lead our city out of this nightmare, this craziness. Bring our city back to the peaceful place it once was.

Do your job.

Since I sent the note - I have received no reply - I've had a few additional thoughts.

Becker and Huntsman should seek federal grant funding to enhance the police department's gang program. More officers to augment the program, more police drive-bys, more police presence in our most dangerous neighborhoods.

Further, let's invite the LDS church to participate in this war on gang violence. The church is loaded with returned missionaries who are multi-lingual. Perhaps, with police help, some could infiltrate gangs to gain investigative information. After-all, the church is a huge occupant and resident of our city. It stands to reason it should become a leader in this renewed fight to take back our neighborhoods.

Sadly, the church and its influence have been silent.

Please send your messages to Becker and to the church. We need results. We need to regain our communities.
