Stick with field hockey
Talk about mission creep!

The newly minted Utah Valley University, which reached its highest purpose as a trade school, is already talking about adding football to its athletic program.

Get this: State taxpayers and students are going to pay for Utah County Intergalactic University to field a gridiron team to play the likes of New Jersey Institute of Technology. (I didn't make that name up.)

Says UVU athletic director Michael Jacobsen (For fun, log onto UtahsRight.com to find out what we pay* him) says:
This is a special day for Wolverine athletics. This will make the university greater. It'll make it all come together like pieces in a puzzle."
More like a riddle: What the hell was the Legislature thinking?

Photo: I know, this picture of UVU students partying has zip to do with athletics. But I love it.

They've been talking seriously about a football team for years. It's too bad, really...students already pay a lot of money to go to UVU (with added fees, etc. it's about the same as the university in Utah Valley).
Really, though, where else would all the football players go that get kicked out of BYU?

While I agree that there are some collegiate football programs which should be eliminated, the majority of football programs (from a study I read somewher, I can't remember where) actually support other sports. For example, how many people watch the Notre Dame softball team? Not many, and while it too is a worthwhile ambition and provides scholarship and athletic opportunities, its the markating dollars aad TV rights of the football program that enable other sports to exist.
Now, there surely are football programs which drain money from other deserving sports. There will always be worthwhile athletics that just don't generate any revenue, but they are inmportant in providing opportunities for students. Football helps in that regard.
Actually Glen, for once, do some damn research too! The AD at Flordia makes $1.2 Million a year (there was a major DNews article on AD salaries in the state, and this is pretty much inline with may other schools in the leauge). You should read the DNews once in a while instead of trashing it like some bitter old man, for heaven's sake.

BYU Idaho dumped their collegiate sports and invested the savings back into academics. What an amazing concept for an institution of learning.
