Utah's famous bridges
If you've been stuck in the traffic on I-80 east of Salt Lake City over the last several weeks, you'll be delighted to know it was caused by an innovative bridge replacement strategy that has transportation wonks around the country talking. The Associated Press reports that Utah's scheme of building the bridges off site, then sliding them into place on skids made of African ironwood that has been lubed with soap, has drawn an audience of bridge builders from around the country and a film crew.
If you want to see what created your bumber-to-bumber commuting experience on I-80, you can watch it on the National Geographic Channel's ''World's Toughest Fixes'' series this fall.

To be politically correct, the tribune has really let its readers down. This morning's story on the bridges is a wire service quickie. The real story is in the Deseret Morning News:

I can't imagine why the tribune didn't do its own story, since the project has been in the works for almost a year. What an adventure this undertaking has become: constructing 7 bridges in one area, then moving them down the road, dropping them in place.
Salt Lake City had a bridge farm and this newspaper - and the Deseret Morning News until today - did just about nothing.
And, seeing that the News was publising a story, the tribune quickly picked up a shallow, bland wire service story that probably will be inserted into some kind of national story.
With few exceptions, like this blog, Pat Bagley and several other reporters/writers, the tribune has become a monumental failure.
The Tribune didn't cover this because it promotes roads but doesn't promote transit.
If the Tribune had covered this, they would have taken the angle of how many people were switching to transit because of the construction delays.
Hey King, bad link. If you're going to throttle someone be sure to get the link right. You probably work in IT for the DesNews.
The highways in Utah have been the favorite pork barrel earmarks in history. I can only wonder how they screwed this one up. Remember syncrete?
The 'Syns' of the fathers shall be visited upon the children.
Sorry Anonymous said 11:29 a.m. The link is/was correct. You probably screwed up trying to connect. Please understand something any dimwit and two-year-old can explain: different people in the state transportation department, more energy, more money, more intelligence, better contractors and much better technology and experience. Utah, dear dimmy, has stepped into the future and the transportation department is leading the way.
Your comments tell me you are a champion at underscoring a complete lack of intelligence.
Dear King God,
Next time you post a url don't wrap it into a ad banner.
I would expect you attitude from people who sit in church 5 times a week and are told they are right about everything and the reason they are entitled to scam the government out of every last dime they can is because they have God on their side.
I hope you spend eternity in a traffic jam along with all your prescription junkies and child molesters from Utah County.
What's a "bumber"? Is it anything like a "bumper"?
What rashness today we have!
