Community organizer vs. missionary
The iSteve blog makes an interesting comparison between Barack Obama's community organizing work and Mitt Romney's efforts as a LDS missionary:

And neither life-changing committment seems to qualify as "experience" to GOP delegates when compared to Sarah Palin's PTA days.Romney's personal sacrifices of comfort sound larger than Obama's (no media!), while their performance was similar (strong in a relative sense -- they both climbed the hierarchy -- but weak in an absolute sense -- they didn't accompl
The main difference, of course, is that Obama has constantly milked his community organizing days for electoral advantage while Romney didn't get much of anything from his mission outside of from Mormons. If the general public was aware of it, it probably hurt him.ish much).
Compared to where John McCain spent 1966-1968, Romney's monastic existence doesn't cut much ice.

Apples-and-oranges comparison. Romney isn't touting his missionary experience as a reason to elect him president. When Romney talks about experience, it's about Bain, 2002 Olympics, and Massachusetts governor. Why talk about missionary experience or community organizing when you have a lot more relevant experience to talk about?
Oh please, Mitt got a religious deferment that got him out of serving in the Viet Nam war and he later declined to enlist after his return to the States. I really doubt living in France as a missionary 2 years compares to McCain's 5 1/2 years of torture and career military service. And knocking on doors and annoying the French does not compare to Obama's legitimate work with the poor white, black and Latino blue-collar neighborhoods in Chicago after the steel-mill closures. Obama worked with the working people, not the CEOs and corporate boards downsizing businesses.
Mitt doesn't measure up to either McCain or Obama on character, sacrifice, or service.
Romney vs. Obama
- Bain vs community organizing
- 2002 Olympics vs community organizing
- MA Governor vs community organizing
Romney wins hands down.
Romney went on a mission to commie land france to avoid the draft.... some community service.
serving your religion and your God automatically signifies you as "avoiding the draft"
you are a horse's a$$...
but you know that.
and what the hell does "commie" land france have to do with this argument? are you claiming he avoided the draft to be a communist, too?
yes, you are a horse's a$$
Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with serving your religion. However, using your religion as an excuse to avoid serving your country by exempting yourself from the draft is another thing.
Mitt delayed college, couldn't he have delayed his military service as well? No, like so many "elites" of his generation (like Cheney and Rumsfeld) he was too "important" to serve in the Armed Forces and found a legal loophole to avoid military service. I see Romey's sons followed in their father's footsteps by also declining military service, but "served their country" by campaigning for their draft resister father.
You can serve both your religion AND your country. But please do not compare the "sacrifices" of a mission in France or "sacrifice" of living in the Governor's Mansion with the real sacrifices of those who served or are serving in Vietnam or Iraq.
Lets hear rousing applause for LDS vets and veterans of all faiths who manage to serve both God and Country.
