Crunch time
Considering his call for a special session Thursday to tackle Utah's increasing economic woes, Gov. Jon Huntsman may have picked a bad week to launch a new environmental initiative. The seven-state Western Climate Initiative wants to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 15 percent by 2020. Part of the strategy is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and generate "green" industries. Utah, of course, has lots of coal to mine and sell.
House Speaker Greg Curtis puts it plainly:
We want to protect the environment. We want to protect the air quality and do all those things . . . but we want to make sure that the coal industry and some of these that are important economic drivers for our state [are not harmed.]
