Election? What election?
From the Capitol . . .In what they claimed was NOT a campaign stunt, goshdarnnit!, several legislators gathered in the Capitol rotunda to announce they would sponsor a package of anti-abortion bills to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
The lawmakers say they have lined up a Washington-based anti-abortion organization "known worldwide," that will provide lawyers to defend Utah when the laws are challenged in court. Defending the laws could run into the millions.
But Rep. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman would not name the organization and admitted the abortion-fighting lawmakers have yet to talk to the state's Attorney General or the Senate about the offer.
When a cynical journalist* challenged the group's motivations for calling the press conference, Rep. Steve Sandstrom, R-Orem, retorted:
This has nothing to do with re-election. . . . It is the wishes of the people of Utah.Rep. Ken Sumsion, R-American Fork, offered an Old Testament warning:
It is reprehensible that anyone would even suggest that protecting unborn life is a political gimmick.
This nation has prospered and been blessed by a higher power , . . . That prosperity may hinge on the value we place upon life. It's time to take Roe v. Wade to the Supreme Court and get it changed.Rep. Chris Johnson, D-Salt Lake, attended the press conference to demonstrate opposition to the bills:
This is obviously a campaign stunt. These are all men from very conservative districts. Why do the taxpayers have to pay for their pet projects?
*Yep, it was the Tribune's ever-reprehensible Rebecca Walsh.

Good luck GOP idiots. Your man McCain is going down in November. Obama and the Democrats will control the legislative and executive branch, and Obama will also have one or two Supreme Court picks in the not too distant future.
Have fun with your costly little stunts, cowboys. The political tide is so against you.
Agreed. The only way there won't be a dem in the whitehouse is if McCain is elected and "accidentally" shot on a hunting trip with Cheney.
Buddha help us.
This is a campaign stunt. Both Wimmer and Sandstrom are worried about getting reelected.
This year is going to be a bloodbath for the GOP at federal and state levels. They brought this upon themselves.
Now they are falling back on the old standby, abortion. What's next? A press conference to announce another constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage? How about a press conference to announce opposition to gun control?
Damn, you guys are desperate. Too bad we can't have a major party that really believes in lower taxes, smaller government and doesn't waste time on lesser issues like abortion, guns, gays, unisex bathrooms...
I cant believe that this is still an issue. No where else but here in Utah and these people really are pervading the term Utard. (no disrespect to the mentally disabled).
Can we please get to some ISSUES rather than continue down the path of American politic non-issue elections. Non issues: Pro-choice/life, race, gender, sexual orientation. At this point in our history I would hope that these would be givens. Lets talk jobs, education, reducing poverty, toxic ground waste, pollution, HEALTH CARE!! Why are we hearing nothing about these actual hard-to-solve problems that we face.
The fact that there is an organization out there willing to fund a tie up of the courts instead of letting people do their job and tackle some the real ISSUES we face in society today is a sad state of the intermingling of church and state.
I don't care what religion you are and I don't care what your religion believes, that is personal, not public. I say, LET IT GO and MOVE ON!
