McCain unleashed the media
It's obvious the Deseret News needs to send columnist Lee Benson out of town more often.

He has delivered another good read from the road, this time from the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, where Benson chews on the Sarah Palin controversy.

He says the GOP's defense of Palin's right to privacy and criticism of the media's digging misses the point:

. . . by introducing Palin as a dedicated, wholesome, anti-abortion former beauty queen "hockey mom" who hunts and fishes and rides snowmobiles and shoots guns and raises her children with a smile, it is the politicians who brought family, and family activities, into the discussion in the first place.

The McCain campaign was the first to invade Palin's privacy and expose her family life to the world, but just the G-rated good parts.

Tribune's Bob Barr Blackout Watch: The Libertarian Party nominated Bob Barr as its presidential candidate 100 days ago, but the Salt Lake Tribune has yet to inform its print edition readers of his candidacy.

Well, then, let's talk family, eh?

Barack's father, who had multiple wives, possibly simultaneously, was literally a scumbag and worthless father.

Barack has a half brother living in abject poverty in Kenya. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselection2008/barackobama/2590614/Barack-Obamas-lost-brother-found-in-Kenya.html

See, this whole family thing is just bullshit. You are not your family. You are shaped by your family, but what you make of it is entirely up to you. All this dirt digging is a sorry excuse for journalism, and just appeals to the most base of instincts.

Drive by media sucks.

Imagine for a moment... you have a woman who could be President because McCain kicks the bucket. This woman is anti-gay, anti-abortion (even in the case of rape and incest), anti-sex education, promotes abstinence only, and wants to entwine her religious beliefs into policy and law. How's that workin' for your family, Pallin? Guess you missed that "abstinence only" talk with your teenager.

Pallin was supposedly FULLY vetted but all Pallin amounts to is eye candy. Now, if she can hunt Al-Queda and Osama Bin Laden as well as she hunts moose or hauls her kids around to hockey games, then I may reconsider.

Hey anonymous... Barack is asking men, particularly black men, to be better fathers - do you actually have an issue with that? How is what you wrote any different than the "dirt digging" you profess to despise? Hypocrite.

Sideon, I think you miss Anonymous' point all together. I think he is pointing at the "dirt digging' to show that none of it is positive or reflective of the candidates. Obama's father sounds like a troubled guy, but Obama appears to be a good father. That's the point: that whatever goes on around you isn't alwayes reflective of who you are.

Further, saying that Governor Pallin is "just eye candy" further sets back any real discussion of the merits of her candidacy. Your entitled to your opinion, however sexist it may be.

As far as the Tribune Bob Barr Blackour watch: sad that it doesn't get more coverage, but they need to put some money in to media (ads, etc) to bring some awareness themselves.
