Destroying Susan Lawrence
You can always tell when you've got extremists on the run — out comes the creative use of labels. And so we see the McCain-Palin camp painting Barack Obama as "unpatriotic," "a terrorist," a "traitor" and, the nastiest possible insult in the mind of right wingers, a "socialist." It only makes sense to "kill him."But you don't have to leave Utah to character assassins use nasty, hysterical vocabulary to defame those who would threaten their control.
Former Utah House member Susan Lawrence is about as a sweet a person as you could imagine. She looks like everyone's favorite first-grade teacher and she's a life-long Republican. But Lawrence, like your favorite first-grade teacher, has a bomb-proof sense of right and wrong (making her a harmless lamb in the Legislature). Out of office, she has naively triggered an ethics probe that threatens some of her former GOP colleagues. Now the jackals are circling.
Former Republican Pary apparatchik Jeff Hartley ripped into Lawrence with over-the-top venom on KCPW radio, saying her allegation that she was offered a bribe to change a vote is "disgusting."
Hartley says her reputation as a moderate lawmaker made her "repulsive." Finally, he hints that Lawrence, who only wanted to see stricter ethics rules on the Hill, may be mentally unstable -- you know: looney, round-the-bend, bongo-bongo, insane in the membrane.
I figure by midweek, GOP leaders will be flat-out accusing Lawrence of being a witch and demanding she be bound and thrown in a pond to prove her innocence.

Bravo, Glen. I am amazed by the mud that is slung by supposedly upright and moral men (and a few women).
And by the way, the hardline Repubs are trying a similarly nasty smear against Rep. Roz Mcgee, who has nothing to gain from the ethics investigation, since she's not running for re-election.
The true character of the right-wing hardliners is certainly coming out in this time of crisis (for them).
Ayers is a less proficient bomber than Timothy McVeigh. In terms of morality, what's the difference? Would you socialize with him? Jeremiah Wright is a black version of Fred Phelps or David Duke. Would you sit in his church for 20 years? Obama associated with them when it was to his benefit. Now he disavows them. Does that not say something about character?
Yeah, there's no way Lawrence could be mistaken in all of this, is there?
Hughes has to be guilty.
After all, conservative Hughes supported vouchers and "moderate" Lawrence opposed them. Do we need any more evidence than that?
McVeigh protested the 52 day stand off with polygamist Koresh and his underage wives.
Ayers protested the Viet Nam war and if it wasn't for people like Ayers we would still be in Nam and McCain and the rest of his POW's would have long been dead by now
I lived in Lawrence's district and had many exchanges with her over the years. She was always willing to listen, even when we disagreed. It's a shame these hypocrites like Hughes and the rest of the Ruzicka thugs are trashing Susan now.
Anonymous at 10:08 sure can spout those Fox News talking points purty, can't he? I'll call your Ayers and Jeremiah Wright and raise you Pastor the Iran-Contra affair and Pastor Hagee, not to mention abuse of power Palin, stealing per diem payments, shooting wolves from airplanes, exploiting her children for political gain, and her witch doctor, Muthee. Does that not say something about her character? Or does it say something about the intelligence of people who regurgitate this nonsense and then hide behing "anonymous?"
1:29--Speaking of talking points . . . . You're not so bad yourself.
Bomb-proof sense of right and wrong? How so? Just because she opposes vouchers?
I haven't seen this much bravery from a woman since Rosa Parks. She is now my hero.
Susan Lawrence should sue the bejeegers out of those slanderous numbies. If there is a legal fund set up for her, I want to contribute.
