The Empire strikes back
Chad Hardy, the poor shmuck who tried to make a buck off missionary beef cake, is getting it from all sides.First the Mormon church excommunicates him, and now, BYU has denied him the degree he thought he earned and paid for. Hardy, a Vegas-based entertainment entrepreneur, made famous by his calendar featuring hot, shirtless returned missionaries, forgot about Brigham Young University's dreaded Honor Code. As a BYU spokeswoman put it:
When a student applies for graduation, he or she must be in good standing with the university.Apparently, distributing lusty photos of missionaries and getting the bum's rush from the church is somehow in violation of the BYU conduct code. Who'da thought?

Have you seen the beefcake prophets that are portrayed in re-prints in The Book of Mormon?
They make Chad and his boys look like wet noodles!
As a Mormon who still believes (although inactive), I think BYU is behaving in an arbitrary fashion. If Hardy was good enough to walk commencement, he's good enough to get his diploma. It is unfair to blindside someone with obscure legalism.
However, here's a suggested solution in which everyone wins.
- First, BYU offers to transfer all of Hardy's credits to another university of his choice.
- Second, Hardy designates another university to receive the credits.
- Third, BYU transfers the credits.
- Fourth, Hardy gets his degree from the other university.
So in this scenario, Hardy could get his credits transferred to U of Utah (for example), and the U awards him the diploma.
Everybody involved goes home with a piece of the pie. Everybody gets a slice of satisfaction. Face is saved.
BYU should stop being so small and petty and just grant the degree to Mr. Hardy. BYU should show a modicum of class.
Potential and current students should consider the potential consequences of "violating" the draconian Honor Code. (Don't get caught on a date in Starbucks.)
The University of Utah is a much better school that will treat you like an adult, no indoctrination, allow you to explore the variety of views in the real world, and the U has never been sanctioned like BYU by the American Association of University Professors for lack of acdemic freedom.
"CTR" Choose the Red.
The guy really is a schmuck. I can't believe these people who voluntarily attend a private, church subsidized institution-as adults no less-and then seem surprised the school enforces its honor code. He should transfer to another school and pay the higher tuition.
Deseret Dawg: For shucks. The church - BYU - is two-faced. A few years back, I interviewed the director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and some of its singers, for a news feature.
Aftrward, the director tried to present me - really, in an official-style presentation - with many of the choir's albums. I declined, saying my company's policy is not to accept gifts, of any king.
Well, the director said, "How about your wife? We'll just give them to her. No one will no the difference."
Accept me.
When I refused that, the director said he'd have them mailed to me. So it would appear that I hadn't solicited them.
I told him no. In no way could I accept those gifts.
He reacted as if I stabbed his first born.
Point: the church and its officials are willing to breach ethics grounds when it's in their favor.
What harm does it to show returned mormon missionaries bare chests?
Dang, and somebitch, I wanted to see photos of shirtless females who have returned from missions.
Best seller, for dang sure.
Part II
It should be except, not accept.
1-Why is "king" always crying about something? Did you ever think that the director just wanted to give a gift as a proselyting tool, just like the LDS Church also gives away Books of Mormon? I also wonder how much was intended as a joke? And considering your relentless rants against Mormons, something tells me you spun this to justify your pathetic lack of convictions.
2-In order to enter BYU (a PRIVATELY funded school), you must sign an honor code. And then when you break it, you should suddenly be exempt from your signed agreement? Is that how other schools operate? I'm sure glad I did not attend one of those weak college afraid to enforce rules.
You can cut through the ignorance with a knife.
