Ethics, surprises and fibs
Voucher-opposition leader Lisa Johnson, who hopes to unseat embattled Rep. Greg Hughes, an architect of Utah's short-lived voucher program, says she had nothing to do with the ethics complaint that has dragged her opponent in front of the House ethics committee.I did not have discussions with anyone involved. I will not.Hughes says the allegation that he offered a bribe to another lawmaker to change her vote on the voucher bill is an "October surprise," timed to do maximum damage to his campaign. One of the attorneys who crafted the complaint against Hughes donated to Johnson's campaign.
Johnson strains credulity beyond recognition in maintaining that a full-page ad calli
ng for ethics reform she bought in a Draper newspaper is just an "interesting coincidence."One of my first thoughts when I saw [the ethics complaint] was, 'Wow, that's an interesting coincidence and I hope people don't take it wrong, Honestly, if I had known, I wouldn't have timed it that way.Uncanny, isn't it? The ethics probe continues next week.

While I agree that the way Lisa phrased her answer is weak, it's not like her focus on ethics reform is anything new. If you followed her candidacy in 2006, she had the exact same message. She also got 40% of the vote as a first-time challenger in that election -- taking on a good ol' boy candidate in Greg Hughes. It's unfortunate that some Democrats are not as straightforward and classy as Lisa, but knowing her (and I do) and her integrity, I'm certain her only involvement in this Hughes ethics complaint is that she's a member of the Democratic party.
You are right, Ms. Maxwell, Lisa has been misrepresenting Hughes position on ethics reform for quite awhile now. Rep Hughes supports ethics reform, but demands that it not include the huge loopholes of the bill he voted against.
It's clear to me that the Democratic Party has had a hand in preparing this complaint for some time. Their communications director had the full complaint before the media did. To think that Lisa might not be heavily involved is plausible, but to think she wasn't tipped off does stretch the imagination. Especially with all the trash talked by many Democrats about this race.
Ethics reform has been a key issue for Lisa Johnson in both of her campaigns. Greg Hughes, on the other hand, has done nothing to further ethics reform in his six years in office. Hughes opposed the gift ban. Hughes killed the bill in the rules committee to create an ethics commission. His record as a champion of ethics reform is hardly stellar. So please, Glen and Brian, keep up with the unfounded conspiracy theories - they do make for entertaining reading!
Lisa Johnson must think the voters in her district are total idiots if she expects them to believe that.
It is true that Democratic Party leadership knew about these allegations before the public did. This is a matter of public record.
We can't prove that Lisa Johnson did not know this was coming just as we can't prove that the allegations against Greg Hughes are true.
Baseless accusation, Glen? You just called a candidate for office a liar. Based on a coincidence that turns out not to be much of a coincidence inasmuch as her campaign (and any smart campaign from a Democratic challenger to the GOP) has focused on ethics reform for years. That makes you something of a turd, doesn't it?
