Michelangelo eat your heart out

Tribune letter writer Maureen Seikaly notes with disdain the Mormon Church's plans to build a temple in Rome:
How could they possibly compete with Michelangelo, the initial designer of St. Peter's dome, and Bernini, who laid out the magnificent plaza in front of St. Peter's?
A Mormon temple in Rome would be the religious equivalent of a Wal-Mart box store marring the skyline.
Here's how, says LDS blogger Giuseppe Martinengo, who claims he got insider information on the new temple:
I have attached a picture of the new Rome Mormon temple that has been designed to blend into the local architecture. Note the three distinctively LDS components of the architecture.
Ha. Ha. Nice photoshop work, Giuseppe!

Yeah, I've always been impressed at how much Salt Lake's Cathedral of the Madeleine looks like the LDS temple. And the Salt Lake Buddhist temple looks just like the Church Office Building.

Has anyone that's complaining about the LDS church building a temple in Rome actually BEEN to Rome? Or have any idea where the temple will be built? It's so far out of the center of town the buildings out there look like any other buildings in any other country.

I love how the loud, ignorant minority seems to get all the attention by the media.

"I love how the loud..."

Well, as long as your heart is filled with "love" then I suppose it's okay for you to do whatever it is you are doing. What is it? Kicking against the [porcupines]?

Or, not.

Listen, you are absolutely correct that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has as much right as anyone else to build a religious building in Rome. Italy is a free country. And, you are absolutely right about the proposed location and all the other modern buildings in the area. But, as a brother, may I suggest that you adopt a less confrontational tone?

As for using Photoshop to place an Angel Moroni on top of Saint Peter's Basilica, that is disrespectful and embarrassing. Our Catholic brothers and sisters deserve better treatment from us.

Love,
A.W.

Oh, I just noticed the Sunstone and the Christus statue too. (I feel like I'm searching for Wally.) I would give an A for ability in dealing with Photoshop, but an F for ability in dealing with other faiths.

It is one thing for someone who holds nothing sacred to mock what is sacred to us. It is entirely another thing for those of us who claim to know and appreciate the sacred to make light of what matters deeply to someone else.

I expect better from us.

Love,
A.W.

Who is this Maureen Seikaly person and why are they the expert on both Mormon and Italian architecture? Most of the LDS temples are actually quite lovely IMO. Granted, none of the current temples are of the Roman style but they often design temples that fits the local surroundings.

I would have to agree with alienated, the photoshop of Angel Moroni on the basilica is disrespectful to our Catholic friends. What is also disrespectful is comparing a LDS Temple to a Wal-Mart.

Actually, it is disrespectful to compare ANYTHING to Wal-Mart.
