From the mouths of clowns
If you just arrived from Mars and wanted to figure out the difference between Salt Lake's daily newspapaers, you would only have to read two columnists — both Mormon.

The Deseret News has Lee Benson, who writes
Here's what I don't get about California and the recent Proposition 8 vote: Why all the commotion over yet another passage of yet another marriage amendment? . . .

In twenty-nine of [other] statewide votes, nobody threw a tantrum.
And so forth.

Meahwhile, The Tribune's Robert Kirby writes of his arrival as a child from California. Kirby says he couldn't figure out why he didn't like Utah: "My family was Mormon. Shouldn't Utah feel more like home?"
One day I was looking around in despair and thought, "Hey, there's nothing wrong with this place that half a million Mexicans wouldn't fix."

I immediately had similar thoughts about blacks, Asians, Puerto Ricans, hippies, surf bums and every other kind of group I was used to having around me for personal contrast.
It's all the more amazing that Kirby is an ex-cop. So much for stereotypes.

Omgosh! I can't believe someone had the same thoughts I did when I moved to the great mountain west. I grew up for the most part in S. Cali and I swear it took about 3 years to get use to all the white people running around. I knew there was a reason I like Kirby

I can't stand too many white people either.

It's better to have too many blacks and Hispanics than it is to have too many whites. Of course, you can never have too many blacks and Hispanics anyway.

Benson writes that crap to get attaboys from his publisher and the church. Time and again he is the apologist for all things Mormon. He's a putz and lacks any legitimate writing talent.

Kirby has talent as a story-teller. And, he doesn't blast his religion all over the pages his stuff adorns.

There is tremendous difference between the two: One has talent and an ability to stick it to himself; the other is a church hack with no journalist credentials.

Remember when Benson's Boss, Cannon, said he was going to make the Deseret News "more Mormon." He's doing it with the likes of Benson, who can't write about anything but his lousy church.

Yay, Kirby. Always straight talk.

Diversity is positive, not spmething to be feared.
