Mormons! The musical
Singing and dancing have always been beloved in the Mormon culture, but a Broadway show in production may change that. The Mormon church's image, reeling from the Prop 8 controversy, could careen into the sublimely ridiculous when the creators of the satirical animation South Park launch the Mormon Musical.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone angered Mormons with their infamous South Park episode "All About the Mormons" that lampoons Mormon history and theology. Now, with a script in hand, they reportedly are working on an LDS-themed musical for Broadway.
Openly gay Broadway actor Cheyenne Jackson has signed up as the star of Mormon Musical:
It's hilarious - very acerbic and biting. It offends everybody but does what 'South Park' does best, which is by the end it comes around and has something great to say.
I play the main missionary, Elder something.
The show (if this isn't all an elaborate hoax) starts rehearsals in December. I wonder if gay rights supporters will boycott it?

What would happen if the Mormons "lampooned" gays and gay marriage? You can be rest assured they'd be branded "hate mongers", etc. etc. - and you'd see a Tribune editorial saying such.
As a non Mormon, the anit-MO sentiment of this newspaper is sickening. It is apparent that the Trib feeds off of this shit ... and without "The Church" (to bash) there would surely be no Tribune.
Take a look at other cities that have 2 newspapers, and see how much a part "religion" plays in their operations; namely NONE. You don't see papers in LA, Boston or New York looking for a religion as it's joke of the day; that IS what happens with the Tribune.
This paper should be ashamed of itself.
Hooray!!!!! Finally someone is gong to portray Mormonism for what it really is......a big song and dance, with whistles and bells. A bunch of hullybaloo, that has no rhyme or reason. I will be there, in all my gayness, on opening night.
To the first anonymous poster (What would happen if ...":
Um, do you know why religion doesn't play a prominent role in the newspapers of the cities you mention? Because those papers are not located in states where one single religion dominates everything in a virtual theocracy. You cannot compare LA and Boston to SLC when it comes to coverage of "religion." Utah is permeated with it. The Trib merely reflects that--whether you agree with its positions or not.
The Mormons deserve everything they have coming to them, facist and bigotist bastard rat fucks!!!
I love this board.....you can say whatever the fuck you want and nothing.....
FUCK YOU TRIBUNE>>>>YOUR GAY FUCKING PAPER CAN GO fuck yourselves>>>>What a faggot-celebrating asswipe cock-sucking paper filled with pricks who couldn't keep a real woman if they tried! I can't wait for the day you take out BANKRUPTCY....
To 2nd and 4th Anonymous...You are acting as if it is "finally" time that Mormons get persecuted and that they have been getting a pass all this time. Least I need to remind you, since its founding Mormons have been hated, mocked, driven from their homes numerous times, and even murdered so this is nothing new.
Also to the 4th Anonymous, I'll find it funny that you are calling someone else a bigot while at the same time condemn a group of people biased on their religious beliefs. I guess tolerance, discrimination, and hate only apply to you in one direction.
If the Trib was anit-MO (sic) it wouldn't have stayed in business as long as it has.
#1 anonymous, why are you reading the Trib if it bothers you so much?
If you want feel-good, biased fluff...perhaps you should stick with the DNews.
To the "third" anonymous ...
From the "first" ...
I understand what you are trying to say. However, to say that the Mormon bashing is overdone in this paper is an understatement. If anyone (such as myself) writes (and I "did") a comment about my support of Proposition 8, the comments are "must be Mormon", "what religion are you", etc.
People fail to realize (get it through their thick heads) that "religion" is at the core of most people's existence. Everyone asks "where did I come from and where am I going" - even myself, a person who is essentially an agnostic.
So, to expect people to just throw their religious beliefs aside is ridiculous. To expect a state that is 70+ percent Mormon to NOT vote in accordance with their religious beliefs is downright ignorant; of course they will do so - and that is THEIR "right".
Utah IS a Mormon state. All these people bitching and moaning know the score. If you live in a place that has as high a percentage of anything (be it gays and their supports such as San Francisco, Southern Baptists, Catholics, etc - of course that is going to show in elections. What would you expect? I would no more expect Proposition 8 to PASS in San Francisco than I'd expect it to fail in Utah.
If people really don't like Utah, in all sincerity, they should pack up and leave. I wouldn't want to live in a place like San Francisco; therefore I don't. The city belongs to gays, their supporters, anti-Americans, and other liberals. I know "that" - as do most people who are alive and breathing in the USA.
Therefore, I really have no right to protest the makeup of a city that "I" decide to live in. The same is true for all the complainers I see (read) on these blogs.
I don't know why someone (people who seem to hate Utah) would want to live amongst a people (any people) that they so vehemently despise.
We stay in utah because it isnt as easy to pick up a family and a job and just leave. So most of "us" are stuck whether we like it or not. Those who are ignorant enough to keep suggesting we move, should be focusing their efforts on moving this state forward into a progressive state, instead of the brainwashing cult place it is. Maybe then the outside world wouldnt see Utah as the cult place it is.
Have to agree with the posters who point out the Tribune's extreme anti-Mormon bias. If memory serves it was founded as an alternative voice but it continually goes to the extreme...like it must find something negative to say about Mormons to justify its existence. Alternative is one thing, antagonistic quite another. It's tiresome at best. I've cancelled my printed subscription and will likely stop reading the on-line version as well. No loss for them but less frustration for me.
Keep your church the hell out of my state and I promise I'll keep my state the hell out of your church.
There was a time in history when religion ruled the world.
Open your history books, students. Go to this section:
THE DARK AGES!!!
Outlaw Mormon marriage.
Re-open Topaz internment camp and ship all gay-bashing Mormons there until they make a blood oath to stop violating other peoples' civil rights.
And let's amend the U.S. Constitution to remove freedom of religion because it's being abused by fascist lunatics.
Religion is a neurological disorder and should be treated appropriately -- with medication and-or burning at the stake.
HEY FBI....if you can locate the poster above me? I think you will have found your anthrax suspect!
"Move Utah towards a progressive state" ...
Here's what progress get you.
1. Strip malls from Ogden to Provo.
2. Hordes more people.
3. High priced homes.
4. Gangs.
5. Park City - once was nice, a place for mountain people like me. However, is now a high priced yuppy town for uppity people from California (and all the shit they bring with 'em).
6. Broken homes.
7. Gay Pride Day, where parents have to explain why grown men are wearing diapers and feeling each other up.
8. STDs - Thanks to "progress" we have diseases that would not occur if people abided by the rules of Mother Nature. This is not just "gays" ... but the "progressive" movement of the 1960s, and the spitting in the face of fidelity in marriage.
"Progressive" is not good in itself; same for "change". Hitler brought "change" and look what came with it.
As a transplant from the Communistwealth of Taxachusetts, I know first-hand what Communism is. A state who's people weren't even allowed to vote on gay marriage. "Not allowed to vote" (sounds like Communism to me). The elite (lawmakers) thought the people were too stupid to decide for themselves, so they wouldn't let them.
The worst thing that happened for the gay movement was gay marriage in Massachusetts. It went on to prove that gay marriage WILL be taught to children in public schools ... as the mayor of San Francisco says "whether we like it or not". We are seeing the same thing with what has happened after the passing of Proposition 8. They lost, and they won't accept it (the loss) ... or the fact that people won't accept their "view" of marriage.
I voted against the ammendment (here) because I didn't want to be spiteful (to the gay community). However, I was wrong. The gay community could care less about my rights and/or yours. They are going to do anything and everything to BE "spiteful" and shove this down my throat (and yours).
Watching what is taking place "now" has definitely changed me from "tolerant" to intolerant. I am NOT going to tolerate gays telling me what I HAVE TO believe. I am not going to tolerate them trashing people's belief (even if I am not of their religion). I am not going to tell me about the "Pregnant Man" who is really a woman! I am not going to tolerate bullies.
for the above post which defies intelligence.
your intolerance is why mormons are being targeted. you called us on with such uneducated bollocks. have you looked in the mirror?
i'm guessing you were agains the blacks word getting the priesthood, too, right? i was an active mormon then. racism and sexism were 2 of the reasons i left mormonism. #1 reason was the church hiding the sins of the straight cub scout leader that raped 150 of us.
mormons should be spending money on the true evils that are threatening "family values". Specifically, child abuse, child rape, spouse abuse, spouse rape, dishonest white collar crime (highest state in the USA? UTAH), intolerance, hatred.
Mormon values = "do as i say or we'll legislate you out of existence"
my dear anonymous blithering idiot.. the change that Hitler brought, was the change advocated by the Mormon Church. go back and read your history books
dominique ...
Mormons didn't legislate Prop 8, the people of California did. Mormons (as well as the pro-gay lobby) have every right to do whatever is legal to influence fellow citizens to vote for their beliefs. I bet it just pisses you off that it was Blacks who were largely (if not completely) responsible for this law passing :)
As with other supporters of gays as well as Mormon haters, you (like them) have made an incorrect assumption.
I am NOT Mormon; their "Priesthood" has nothing to do with "me". I moved here because Utah is a state with values that I admire and wanted for my family. I left a state for the converse reason; namely, it is a state that stands for everything I "don't" - be it gay marriage, abortion, gun control, motorcycle helmet laws and other liberal ideologies.
It's pathetic how people can trash the Mormon Church in the USA. If this were any other religion, it would never be tolerated. If it was any other religion, you'd never EVER see a newspaper allow the shit the Tribune allows. Their reporters have an obvious hatred (real "hate") towards the LDS Church.
The Tribune used to be "Utah's Independent Voice" - or better said, Utah's "Catholic" voice. Now it is just a joke. It's a money maker for Dean Singleton - a "rag" like the National Enquirer. Their "beat" is digging up trash on movie stars; the Trib's beat is trashing the Mormon Church.
So why do I bother to read it? So I can see what the "enemy" is up to.
A musical about Mormons? Awesome! I be it will be as factual as "Angels in America" that portrayed the crucifix as LDS. Mormonism is becoming a very marketable religion. Look at how many people make millions of dollars off of fighting and mocking the Mormons. It's very trendy to be a Mormon hater. To bad most people don't care to know or understand the facts, but as long as everyone is making money then who cares? I'm glad it's Cheyenne Jackson playing the lead. Hopefully he will get naked. He's got a hot gay body.
“It is a fact worthy of note that the shortest lived nations of which we have record have been monogamic. Rome…was a monogamic nation and the numerous evils attending that system early laid the foundation for that ruin which eventually overtook her.”
Apostle George Q. Cannon, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 13, p. 202
“…the one-wife system not only degenerates the human family, both physically and intellectually, but it is entirely incompatible with philosophical notions of immortality; it is a lure to temptation, and has always proved a curse to a people.”
Prophet John Taylor, Millennial Star, Vol. 15, p. 227
“Monogamy, or restrictions by law to one wife, is no part of the economy of heaven among men. Such a system was commenced by the founders of the Roman empire….Rome became the mistress of the world, and introduced this order of monogamy wherever her sway was acknowledged. Thus this monogamic order of marriage, so esteemed by modern Christians as a holy sacrament and divine institution, is nothing but a system established by a set of robbers…. Why do we believe in and practice polygamy? Because the Lord introduced it to his servants in a revelation given to Joseph Smith, and the Lord’s servants have always practiced it. ‘And is that religion popular in heaven?’ it is the only popular religion there,…”
The Prophet Brigham Young, The Deseret News, August 6, 1862
“This law of monogamy, or the monogamic system, laid the foundation for prostitution and the evils and diseases of the most revolting nature and character under which modern Christendom groans,…”
- Apostle Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 13, page 195
“We breathe the free air, we have the best looking men and handsomest women, and if they (Non-Mormons) envy us our position, well they may, for they are a poor, narrow-minded, pinch-backed race of men, who chain themselves down to the law of monogamy, and live all their days under the dominion of one wife. They ought to be ashamed of such conduct, and the still fouler channel which flows from their practices; and it is not to be wondered at that they should envy those who so much better understand the social relations.” Apostle George A Smith, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, page 291
“I have noticed that a man who has but one wife, and is inclined to that doctrine, soon begins to wither and dry up, while a man who goes into plurality [of wives] looks fresh, young, and sprightly. Why is this? Because God loves that man, and because he honors his word. Some of you may not believe this, but I not only believe it but I also know it. For a man of God to be confined to one woman is small business. I do not know what we would do if we had only one wife apiece.”
- Apostle Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses Vol 5, page 22
“Just ask yourselves, historians, when was monogamy introduced on to the face of the earth? When those buccaneers, who settled on the peninsula where Rome now stands, could not steal women enough to have two or three apiece, they passed a law that a man should have but one woman. And this started monogamy and the downfall of the plurality system. In the days of Jesus, Rome, having dominion over Jerusalem, they carried out the doctrine more or less. This was the rise, start and foundation of the doctrine of monogamy; and never till then was there a law passed, that we have any knowledge of, that a man should have but one wife. “
- The Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses Vol. 12, page 262
Good read (above anonymous) but most educated people know that religion (all "religion") is essentially BS. Most of it came about when people were ignorant and stupid. How do those in control (usually the educated and wealthy and few in number) keep the masses "in-check". They do so by promising "treasures" in the next world. If they don't comply and "rebel", it's "devils" (with horns), dragons with fangs, witches, boiling in a pot, burning in hell (or whatever) ... "forever".
These guys (BY) and others "preached" to a basically uneducated populace. I've met many Mormons who have told me (privately) that they know the JS "story" is a crock; however, so too have many other Christians (who go to church) told me "I don't know if Jesus was the son of God, but he was a good man".
If you look in the Bible, it is full of contradictions.
Regardless ...
When it comes to the gay "issue", it doesn't take a religion to see that the pieces don't fit. Anyone who says they "do" is lying to me and you. Gay "sex" (if it can be called that) occurs using parts of the anatomy that are not designed for "sex". I don't have to go into specifics ... we all know what goes on, and it is not "normal".
As for the above statements ...
Perhaps in time of war, when men are all killed off, polygamy WOULD be a benefit to society. If you've seen pictures of BY's "wives", you'd have to admit, there is little there to generate "lust". However, in a time when there are approximately 50% men to 50% woman, if 50% of all men had 100% of all woman, what would happen to the other 50% of men?
The best thing for men (and woman) ... and their kids, is a male/female "marriage". Single men are known to have the shortest life span ... and although I can't supply statistics (just now) it surely seems the single men are the one who have the most problems in society such as committing crimes, suicide, etc.
A man needs a woman ... and vice-versa. Children need a mother and father. Each of the sexes has a part in the upbringing of their children. Two men raising a female child ... or two woman raising a male child just isn't "right".
I can only speak for "me" but I can surely say that I would not want "daddy" to be some guy who choked his chicken while looking at Playboy ... so that my gay "mommy" could have a child for her and her lesbian lover.
Without technology, gays would die off. Sperm donation (and the like) is not "natural" and we all know it. When you fuck with Mother Nature, you get burned; so does society as a whole. Everyone (today) laughs at the days of "Leave it to Beaver"; however, most people (and the US as a country) were much happier back then.
I wonder how they'll portray the scene where Joseph Smith gets caught by his wife having sex with children. How will they do the "revelation" scene?
How about Brigham Young, with his 75 wives or whatever he had?
Or the grand-poobah prophet or whatever declaring that black people were being punished?
Or the scene where the mormons encourage their german brethren to obey the Nazis? Think of the outfits!
I can't wait! It will be a hoot!
Again, I have to ask the obvious: are all mormons retarded, or just the ones who post here?
