Prop 8 battle, Part II

Gay rights supporters have filed three lawsuits asking the California Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8. They argue the gay-marriage ban is an illegal constitutional revision.
Supporters of Prop 8, which includes the Mormon church, say the suits are a blatant attempt to subvert the will of the people. Frank Schubert, co-chairman of the Proposition 8 campaign says the gay rights activists should bring an initiative themselves:
But they don't. They go behind the people's back to the courts and try and force an agenda on the rest of society.Hundreds of gay rights supporters in Los Angeles clashed with police during a protest of the passage of Prop 8, which they compare to long-overturned laws that banned marriage between races.
And this just in: Mid-level Mormon Church leader L. Whitney Clayton (what is it about LDS leaders and initial initials?) is calling for healing and for both sides to treat the other "with civility, with respect and with love."
For gay rights activists, this is, of course, the equivalent of passing miscegenation laws then telling mixed-race couples to chill.

Does the LDS church have tax exempt status and if so, how does it maintain it with it's partisan political activity in another state's elections?
Ummm...the LDS church is everywhere. Why do you think there are no Mos in Cali?
Talisyn: About 45% of individual out-of-state contributions to ProtectMarriage.com came from Utah, over three times more than any other state. The LDS leadership in SLC actively encouraged its members, not just those in CA, to donate time and money towards Yes on 8. The Church itself donated millions and millions that could've fed the starving, housed the homeless, and brought comfort to the suffering, but used it instead to amend my state's constitution to discrimate against others. You are a member of a hate group. Shame on you and your church.
"The Church itself donated millions and millions"
The news I read was that the church itself donated nothing except the cost of accommodations for leaders such as Mr. Clayton to travel there. Is there actual documentation of the church donating millions?
The LDS didn't directly put its name on any donations to "Protect Marriage." However, it did "support their financially strapped members" by reimbursing those that donated to Yes on 8 as "charitable cases." As these reimbursements sat individually under the $12K mark to be reported as required by the IRS, the LDS can claim "clean hands" on this despicable crusade, despite the fact that they ran phonebanks in Utah and California and actively requested time and money from its members during church services. The church's time and tithings would've been much better devoted elsewhere, but they chose to focus on adding discrimination to the California constitution.

Listen (to all the geniuses on this forum):
1-The church did NOT pay money to this campaign. The members did.
2-Stop crying about "partisan political activity". This is a moral principle, not a political one. Unfortunately, it just happens to be liberals that embrace homosexuality as a national way of life and basis for marriage. This has always been a moral issue before politics even existed. Get over it.
3-Hate group? Really? Preserving the traditional definition of marriage established by God is hateful? Wow. Let me guess, you also want to remove every roadside cross in memory of those killed in the line of duty? Get over yourself.
There is a petition circulating to urge the IRS to review the 501 (c)
(3) status of the Church of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). Federal
tax law specifies that lobbying is not a legitimate activity for tax-
exempt organizations, and it seems to me that the LDS's recent
activities in support of CA Proposition 8 (banning gay marriage) are
clearly a form of lobbying. You can view this petition at: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/tell-a-friend/2295323
I am a straight male, age 62, married 40 years, and I don’t see for the life of me how gay marriage hurts anybody’s marriage.
If a church or person doesn’t believe in it, then fine. But don’t pass laws against it.
We have dozens of Utah families living in homeless shelters, and that money spent in California could have changed their lives. Doesn’t anyone see the contradiction with Christian family values?
The anti-gay marriage people have hyped their cause to preposterous levels. Does the marriage of Jim and Bob of Arbuckle City, California at the Colusa Country Courthouse really have any affect on anybody’s marriage? By preventing Jim and Bob from getting married, we are saving the family? Come on, get real.
I wonder if the present LDS leadership would have become involved in this political crusade if they had known the reaction? As an outsider, I say with respect that lot of the good will that they have built up with their humanitarian efforts seems to be evaporating.
IMPORTANT: I don't believe the LDS Church is a cult or non-Christian, and my disagreement is not with Mormon theology. I disagree with the mean-spirited policy and the funding of a crusade off in California. Some Mormons that I've known have been salt-of-the-earth people. I've lived in Utah my whole life.
PS: I don't know how I came up "anonymous." My email is farcity101@hotmail.com, and my name is Roger Carrier, and I live in Sandy. I'm a straight male, age 62, married 40 years, and I don't believe gay marriage is a threat to anybody.
Times are changing as we speak, and by the year 2020, we will see a lot of back-peddling by those who now oppose gay marriage. Being opposed is and old-age thinking thing.
If I'm lucky, I'll be 74 on July 1, 2020, and I would like to meet members of the opposition on the steps of the Utah State Capitol Building at one in the afternoon. Let's make it a date. I can't wait to hear your spin--"We never really opposed gay marriage as such. You misunderstood...." I'll let you finish the sentence.
Please remember that my complaint is with the mean-spirited policy of the present leaders of the LDS Church, not with Mormons or the church. I don't believe the LDS Church is a cult, and I know many Mormons that I would trust my life to.
Correcting Misinformation from a Californian who's seen it all. Utah still has a lot to learn about this issue.
-No on Prop 8 raised more money and still lost.
-5% of the voting population in California is LDS, hardly a majority.
-Exit polls showed that the African American and Latino vote significantly supported Prop 8 up to 70% . The term "Don't compare your sin to our skin" is a cry against the civil "right" arguement. Obama vote definitely helped Prop 8. Ironic isn't it?
-Giving Govt. a voice into religious freedom of what can and can't be said over the pulpit is a clear violation of 1st ammendment rights.
-losing the ability for churches to run adoption agencies or doctor's who are sued because they won't perform insemination to gay couples is a reality with "marriage" as part of the state laws.
-and finally, yes, school children will be taught about same sex marriage when they don't even know what "sex" is yet. It is in the ed code.
The people voted. Now the indignant people want to vilify and destroy those who disagree with them. Who are the real haters here. Hmmm.
Watch the Keith Olberman video on gay marriage (Countdown with Keith Olberman). We should encourage, not discourage marriage, encourage love, not discourage it.
I'D GO TO SEVERAL WEBSITES SEE WHAT HAPPENED BECAUSE A MAN WAS MADE OUT TO BE GAY!http://drop.io/rlwalls....http://drop.io/rlwalls2....http://drop.io/rlwalls3...http://drop.io/rlwalls32555...PASSWORD FOR ALL IS:robert..READ WHOLE STORY.ALL THIS WAS DONE BECAUSE MAN REFUSED TO BE PUT IN GAY STORY,AND FOUGHT BACK!
