Steve Young's wife problem
Is Steve Young's wife trying to sack his political future?

I can only assume the legendary NFL quarterback and BYU deity is trying to follow the Mitt Romney strategy for running for public office — emphasize your leadership fame and build on the rock-solid base of the Mormon voting bloc.

But this California Proposition 8 thing complicates Young's ambition (and undermines his ranking of coolest Bay Area sports figure). Being aligned with the LDS church, which is bankrolling the drive to outlaw gay marriage, puts him crosswise with about half the California electorate (His jersey number was 8!). Under heavy pressure, Young appears to be trying to walk the line between the two groups by not taking a public stand on the issue.

Then his wife Barbara takes the snap and rolls out — very publically donating $50,000 to the effort to stop Prop 8, sticking pro-gay marriage lawn signs in front of their house and spouting off crazy stuff like:
Steve is completely supportive of me and my work for equality.
She makes her hall-of-famer husband like a wimp, which he exacerbates by telling KSL:
For Barb, who has a remarkable and enviable compassion for others, those political activities are far more public than mine. Those who know me know I chose long ago not to be publicly active in the political process.
Here's the solution Steve: Move back to Utah and run for the senate or governor. The LDS bloc will forgive you after the ladies in the ward scrub Barbara of her "passion for human rights." You'll win in a walk.

Tribune's Bob Barr Blackout Watch Reminder and Finale: The Libertarian Party nominated Bob Barr as its presidential candidate on May 25, 2008, and 139 days later -- with less than one month before Election Day -- The Salt Lake Tribune finally informed its print edition readers of his candidacy.

See "McCain or Obama: Utahns want next leader to heal economy," October 11, 2008.

And "Early voters generating 'huge numbers' at polls," October 28, 2008.

Acknowledging how unprofessional the Tribune's political news coverage has been, political reporter Robert Gehrke joked about the Tribune's artificial suppression of Bob Barr's name identification by insulting the intelligence of and mocking the Tribune's readers.

See "Vote For That One Guy!", October 31, 2008.

By comparison, the Tribune notified its readers of the candidacies of Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama on an almost daily basis in 2008.

The Tribune first reported on:

*Ralph Nader's 2008 presidential candidacy as early as March 1, 2008.

*The presidential candidacy of the Constitution Party's Chuck Baldwin on July 3, 2008.

*The presidential candidacy of the Green Party's Cynthia McKinney on September 4, 2008.

In the interim, those who noted the omission of Barr's candidacy from the Tribune's national political coverage were prevented from further comment on the TribTalk forums and SLTRIB.COM comments section after their accounts were disabled and IP addresses blocked by the Tribune's web site administrators.

Almost 95 percent of all American voters -- in 45 states -- can vote for Barr on the ballot. Only Obama and McCain have access to more American ballots.

Nationwide polls show Barr receiving support from between 1 to 2 percent of voters (or about 1 in 50 American voters), and up to 11 percent support in some battleground states.

The CEO of MediaNews (which owns the Tribune), William Dean Singleton, was a significant financial supporter of Republican U.S. President George W. Bush.

This is actually a smart move for Young, assuming he has any political interests. In ten years, the Ruzickas, Meros, Christensens and Buttars of the world will be swept aside. They'll end up being the Bull Connors and George Wallaces of the 21st century.

He always would talk about this dream to go on a mission when he was older with his wife to someplace where they knew nothing about football.

I wonder if that will still happen.I wonder if she would still want to go.

I am begining to have my doubts.

Oh for the love of God, do we have to have they stupid Bob Barr wacth on every one of these!
Nobody cares, the time has run out.
Maybe the libertarian party should have run someone better than Dell Schanze and Bob Barr to get media attention, for God's sake.
Ralph Nader always gets attnetion becuase he says wacky things, and Cynthia McKinney is a certified nut job. The Consitituion party plays a small but growing role in Utah politics. They gave the media something to talk about?

What did the libertatians give the media?

Bob Barr and Dell Schanze. Great contribution.

Please. For the love of God, stop with the Bob Barr blackout watch.

Are you serious? If you're LDS as well, the rest of us would have to conclude that we should doubt your commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ since you're acting like a judgmental asshole who knows everything about Barbara Young's dedication to the church based on a political stance.

Thank you for reminding us why Jesus stayed out of politics and rendered unto Caesar what was his.

So Barbara Young, according to her husband, Steve, has a "remarkable and enviable compassion for other". Sounds like something any religious person should be striving for. And yet, because of her stance on Prop 8 people of religion would chastise her? That is truly disgusting.

I am LDS and conservative, but have always felt sympathy for gay people. I find it hard to get exercised about gay marriage and am not sure how it could undermine traditional marriage. I am very concerned about this: As gay marriage becomes more prevalent and becomes constitutionally protected, it is only a matter of time before there is a lawsuit challenging the tax exempt status of a church because it will not perform gay marriages. When that happens, churches in America can say hello to 40% corporate tax rates and Americans who make charitable donations through churches can say goodby to the tax deductions. This will dramatically weaken the religious institutions in America and the charitable functions they perform.

Anon 11:10 AM, look at the post of Anon 8:55 AM.

Most Prop 8 opponents know, in their heart of hearts, what Prop 8 will do to churches like the LDS in the long run. And they're licking their chops in anticipation of that day.

Two things: Bob Barr is a non-issue, non-starter, non-candidate. Perhaps if he shaves his neo-Nazi moustache he'll have more appeal.
Second: If Steve Young is sill interested in being a homophobe, perhaps he can come back to Utah and oust or current denizen of second-class citizenry, Chris "Black Baby" Buttars.

Superstar,
It's funny when I hear other LDS people tell others not to be judgemental. I can judge things as I see it. Just as your Bishop, a Common Judge in Israel, judges people's worthiness to enter the temple.
So, I judge Barb Young. What i basing that judgement on is whether or not she can openly defy a call from the Prophet to support Proposition 8, and yet still want to serve as a missionary later and teach people about that same prophet and same Church.

I disagree with the way things are done in the Church from time to time, but when the First Presidency sent out a letter asking for support, and if you are a faithful Latter-day Saint, that pretty much ended the argument for me. The Prophet has said this is a moral issue, and here is what we should do. This is not a political issue like taxes and redistricting.
This is a moral issue, and Latter-day Saints should pretty much be on the same page.

Barb Young, disagrees with the Prophet. You will argue she is free to do so. What I wonder is what she will do with this new found freedom to disagree.

Anonymous who was dissing Superstar. You're just jealous of Barb Young because she gets to sleep with Steve Young. I've seen him I'm close and he's hot (and I'm gay).

Anonymous at 3:12, you're gay congratulations.
You are also totally off topic.
Typical "let's get shrill and talk about who's hot instead of real issues" banter.
Come back when you are a gay grownup.
But I am sure you will counter with that you can't grow up until you can marry or adopt.

I am sure your post shows that your maturity has nothing to do with your legal rights.

Whatever happened to freedom of thought, speech, and to believe in anything so long as it is firm within your heart?
Barb shows extrordinary courage by standing up for what she believes. And Steve shows extrordinary love for her to support her in this.
One can be a member of the LDS church AND support gay marriage at the same time. At least these people want to be married and not simply live in sin.
Which is worse? Who is to decide? Who are we to judge? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
