Days with gays

Coming against the backdrop of a recession, the "Day without Gay" effort likely will be a bust in Utah. And, as the Sundance Film Festival rolls out, it appears the call for a comprehensive boycott of all things Utah over Prop 8 either won't happen or won't be noticed.
Mark Worthen, an organizer of Park City's "call in gay" effort, called it off in a bridge-building gesture:
We listened to the arguments of business owners and others that taking any action that could hurt the local economy is not wise during what might be the worst recession since World War II.Still, these stories and others on Proposition 8 outrage that appear nearly daily are proof to even the most benighted conservative that Zion has a large and increasingly politically potent gay and lesbian population. And they have a growing number of friends willing to speak out. Ogden Unitarian minister, the Rev. Theresa Novak writes harshly of the LDS church:
It has been painful to watch a group of people for who I have a great deal of respect try in vain to take on the role of innocent victim. The true test of gay rights clout will come in January when the Legislature deals with a six-pack of domestic-partnership rights known as the Common Ground Initiative, that address medical care, fair housing, employment, and other rights for same-sex couples.
While I don't support vandalism or violence of any kind, I believe that anger at the LDS church hierarchy is completely justified. They are simply reaping what they have sowed.
And, yes, a bill to guarantee the right to "call in gay" without getting fired, may also be on the table.

Gay, straight or what have you, just do your job. Go to work.
Once again the gay community has bad timing, and is doing this in the middle of the worst economic times. They could end up hurting more gays than helping.
Getting a day off work because of my sexuality? This doesn’t make sense to me. Mike Thompson, executive director of Equality Utah, said. "Consideration for employment or promotion in the workplace … should be based on performance and not on a person's sexual orientation or gender identity." I agree with Mr. Thompson that sexuality should not be an issue in the work place. Therefore, I completely disagree with “calling in for being ____________” Go to work and earn your rewards.
Sounds like the whole thing has kinda peter'd out.
What would be the point? I am gay and I'm still trying to figure out what this would prove. It doesn't make much sense to me.
ah.. makes sense. As quoted from http://daywithoutagay.org: "Fight H8 with love. Take the day off work and volunteer to be of service." It seems a lot of articles are leaving that out.
A) I don't care what you do in the bedroom. It's no more my business than it's your business what I do in mine. I DON'T CARE.
B) I value you as a co-worker no more and no less than any of the other people we work with (see A above), but if you decide not to come into work, and I have to cover part of your workload because of it, I will think you are a JERK, and that has nothing to do with what you do in the bedroom.
C) Prop 8 was voted down, by a majority of voters I might add, in CALIFORNIA. And it's OVER and DONE with. The time to protest and speak out was before the vote, when you might have acutally made a difference (like the LDS church did.) Now it just makes y'all look like sore losers.
D) Those who voted YES on Prop 8 in CALIFORNIA, and those who supported it in Utah, have just as much right to their opinion as those who voted against it or opposed it. Yeah, that Freedom of Speech thing is so terribly inconvenient when it works both ways, isn't it?
E) This is America. Americans have the freedom to vote any way they choose, and retaliating against someone because they voted a way you don't like... that's crossing a line. Go to Russia if you want to act that way, or Iraq; we have laws against it here.
Hey Majority Vote, in case you missed the news, Prop 8 was NOT voted down. It was approved. Get your facts straight (so to speak) before you start lecturing anyone. And as for the freedom of speech argument? Yes, it does work both ways. And it's time for OUR voices to be heard!
A gay employee called in sick yesterday...today he was cleaning out his desk!
Bullshit...no one was fired for calling in sick yesterday. Pull your head out of the sand.
