Busting FLDS myths
As we all know, one of the primary reasons the polygamous FLDS sect was targeted by the government is that it is, in the words of U. S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, "a sophisticated, wealthy and vast criminal organization" that commits welfare fraud.

Unfortunately, that belief may simply be a figment of our bigoted imaginations. Records show that the much-quoted statements that the FLDS culture promotes such crime is simply baloney spread by its enemies. (Does that kind of slander sound familiar, Jews, gypsies, Catholics and LDS?)

According to an article by the Tribune's Brooke Adams:

None of the 600 or so residents of the Yearning For Zion Ranch received any form of welfare, according to state officials. Cash assistance is almost nonexistent in the twin towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz.

While many families living in the sect's traditional home base receive food and medical help, virtually all those families qualify under program guidelines, authorities say. There has been a single fraud case prosecuted in the past decade.

from the article: "But Paul Murphy, spokesman for Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, said that while there may not be "outright fraud" by the polygamous community, there is "a resentment that taxpayers are being used to support this lifestyle.

"If you are going to have three wives and 15 children, you need to figure out a way to support three wives and 15 children," he said."

So what Paul Murphy is admitting to is targeting a religion! The same should hold true for the 'one wife club' that he's a part of! I think we would be fine with scraping the whole program all together. It's acctually distasteful to me to think that my tax dollars are going to some monogomist that only has one wife and five children. Why couldn't a man support one wife and only five children!!

They need to either have a program that doesn't discriminate against race, religion, sex, etc.etc. or they need to scrap the whole thing!

BTW:
What he's saying here is that we're being persecuted for someones 'resentment'. This man should step down and let someone who has some integrity fill the position.

The Cult is a well insulated society that hides all types of abuse well, including child rape. Why the Trib and their hacks spend time trying to present these criminals as just nice, misunderstood folks is a injustice to every law abiding citizen in the nation.

Just because a child is brain washed and does not recognize that she is a victim does not mean she is a not a victim.

Brooke Adams- you are an apologist for child rape.

Wow! Is Glen admitting that the LDS has been "slandered" at various points in history? What's the next step Glen, admitting that you have slandered them as well?

Hmmm.... It seems that Brooke did not do very good research.

Though statistics aren't available for individual families or addresses for privacy reasons, Stephanie Goodman, a spokeswoman for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, gave me these numbers for Schleicher County, which includes Eldorado.:
* Food stamps: 122 recipients in September 2005; 203 recipients in April 2008
* Children's Health Insurance Program: 111 children in January 2003; 63 children in April 2008
* Medicaid: 262 people (including 160 children) in September 2006; 283 people (including 182 children) in April 2008
These numbers leave a lot of questions and certainly don't give us a definitive explanation of how common it was at the ranch to be on public assistance. But clearly, everyone there wasn't enrolled in Medicaid.

What was the lie Willie said? NO one at YFZ was on assistance? Food Stamps: 122 in 2005, 203 in 2008; Children's Health Insurance Program: 11 in 2003, 63 in 2008; Medicaid: 262 (including 160 children in 2006 and 283 (including 182 children) in 2008. Disproves the lie that NO ONE at the YFZ compound received government assistance.

Deb-
Those numbers are for the entire county and don't necessarily include any FLDS.

Only in Utah would something this obvious be a "debate." IT'S CHILD RAPE YOU F'ING MORONS. Who cares if they are on welfare? And for christ's sake stop calling it bigotry. When someone commits a crime and is persecuted for it, it is not bigotry it is JUSTICE. If you need an example of bigotry, I'll give you one: Bigotry is denying a person the civil right of marriage simply because they love someone of the same sex.
