Greek tragedy, Utah style
Ogden police officer Ken Hammond, the hero of Trolley Square, has resigned.

Hammond was the first person to respond to gunman Sulejman Talovic in February 2007 when Talovic went on a rampage, shooting nine people — killing five.

Court documents filed Dec. 29 allege Hammond had sex with a 16- or 17-year-old girl in 2005. Another woman has filed suit, saying she was sexually harassed by Hammond during a 2008 arrest.

I'm saddened by this, as is, I guess, most of Utah. He was, indeed, a hero, let's not overlook that.

But, I have said it here before and will continue to state it: Utah law-enforcement officers are but an eyelash's width of crossing the line onto the dark side.

So many Utah highway patrol officers, city cops, deputies, take advantage of their status in society and abuse their "protect and serve" motto. We've seen the stories in the Tribune, more than we care to list here.

I'm also saddened because some of these men and women give up so much to put on their uniforms.

But, I keep in mind, this is Utah and law-enforcement abuse is very commonplace.

I hope this officer can make something of his life.

As long as Utah puts pedophile Joseph Smith on a pedestal we are going to have more wackos, drunk with authority committing sex crimes.

Here's the latest: Former Murray Police officer, Michael Spilman, was arrested on Friday for several sex-related offenses.

RE: Anonymous

Wow, that's not a stretch at all, is it? Let's blame the illegal actions committed by someone today on someone who died a century and a half ago, not on the perpetrators.

While we're at it, why don't we reveal who is really responsible to those peanut butter-linked samonella poisonings. Sure, we could take the easy way out and blame the companies that are making the peanut butter and failing to ensure that it is safe. But look a little deeper, and you will see that it is really GEORGE WASHINGTON CARTER who is to blame!
