Just say no
President Barack Obama's $800 billion stimulus bill could mean a couple billion in government handouts for Utah. If you like mind-boggling numbers, take a gander at this:- $600 million to state aid
- $300 million to transportation and water projects
- $200 million to Medicaid.
- $150 million to upgrade schools
Unfortunately, Zion's ultra-conservative, free market-lovin' leaders — particularly those in Utah County — will have to refuse any and all of this tainted government money on principle.
Like that'll happen.

Glen, as someone who has communicated directly with both Washington D.C. and teh Governor's office (I'm a government employee), the stimulus package that comes to Utah will only be in the order of $200-$300 Million dollars, even though we lead the nation in "shovel ready projects" and haev transportation needs totalling $4 Billion dollars. So, you stating that Utah would get Billions is incorrect.
I am a Republican and I like the idea of stimulus aid, but it should go back to being just three things: 1) Shovel ready transportation projects, including transit; 2) Shovel ready school imporvement and building proejcts that will also make schools more energy efficient; 3) environmental projects that are shovel ready such as trails, waterways, and others.
Obama has let too many hands stir this pot, and now we are seeing the waste that is being put in.
As a result, Utah gets only a fractoin of what it needs, as if it wasn't a big enough political heavyweight and the fact that our state overwhlemingly voted for McCain.
I lose "hope" and am seeing less "change" everyday.
How much of the stimulus is going to trickle down from our Mormon Overlords to us common Gentiles?
Fact is we either have paid that money to the Fed or we equally share the debt of that money as the rest of the country, so to claim this is some free handout is quite incorrect. That money belongs to us we should take it, don't through LDS conservative mind sets into this, we have paid billions in Fed monies to pay for Planed parenthood and PBS garbage we should collect a small portion without being called hypocrites!
As for the Mormon Overlords comment, that's irrelevant.
If the state gets what it needs it will surely a(and legally have to) pass it on to communities and families.
But, what it looks like is we won't get enough and that UDOT will gobble up a majority of it. So, we get some of the roads that we need, but communities that are in need of help with transit and transportation won't get it.
Anonymouse,
Let's not get too carried away. PBS costs only about $200 million a year, which is but 1/50 of one percent of the federal budget, or less than one dollar per citizen per year.
For that we get such programs as "Are You Being Served?" and "Fawlty Towers," which, you have to admit, are more entertaining, not to mention informative, than the U.S. Congress, which costs as about five billion dollars a year.

Another SLC Democrat poses the question ....How much of the stimulus is going to trickle down from our Mormon Overlords to us common Gentiles?
Typical of the left to expect to extract benefit from a source he fails to make contribution!
