Reading over their shoulders
Senator-elect Steve Urquhart has a good idea: Documents given to lawmakers — even last-minute ones, often timed to stampede legislators — should be made available to the public on-line. Urquhart argues on his blog:Many of those documents are embarrassingly simplistic and deceptive – intended to stir passions at the time of voting, when it is too late to fact-check the documents’ assertions. The National Conference of State Legislatures is intrigued by the idea and has asked its members to discuss the potential problems online.
If they became part of an open and permanent record, the documents might become more honest and substantive. Or, even if they remain trite and deceptive, they could be used as “smoking guns” for future reform.
