GOP vs. LDS
The national Republican Party has a unusual problem going into future elections: too many of its best candidates, including Gov. Jon Huntsman, are Mormon. Conservative commentator David Frum at The New Majority says the problem is rooted in the fact that many Americans, including a large part of the GOP base, find the Mormon religion repugnant:

This dislike presents a special problem for Republicans. Two of our most plausible candidates for president in 2012 are leading Mormons: Mitt Romney and Utah governor Jon Huntsman. Both of them bring special and important advantages to the race: Romney his success in expanding health insurance coverage in Massachusetts; Huntsman his innovative stands on the environment and social issues. Both men are highly intelligent, with strong business backgrounds, and easy verbal fluency.

If candidates like these cannot be elected to national office because of their religious affiliation, then our Republican talent pool looks dangerously shallow. It’s important to know: how thick are the barriers against a Mormon president – and what might help to surmount them?

We (as a country) have just elected a black man to the presidency. That's pretty amazing considering our past. However, if you can still be fired because your gay, and not elected because you are Mormon, we still have a huge problem with bigotry. Racism may be dying, but bigotry is alive and well.

How about the form of bigotry that prevents anyone that's not a Mormon to have a $50K a year government job like here where there is nothing *but* government jobs?

So sad. The bigot that can't see he/she is a bigot. I personally know many individuals in government in Utah, or have been in government that are not Mormon. So you don't like Mormons... and they are the reason you have failed to get yourself a 50K government job? By the way... I would love to find out where this treasure trove of government jobs is here in Utah, seems to be one of the few States in the Union that has few government jobs outside of the post office and TSA. Perhaps you could enlighten us to those jobs as you have enlightened us to your bigotry?

With democratic stalwarts like Mayor Rocky Anderson and Becker and his peckers, you can see why No Non-Mo's from the left are considered!

Dear Blanding,

Last time I checked, people other than Mormons have been known to break the law.

Are all Catholics bad because of some naughty priests?

Are all Germans bad because of Hitler?

In short: Grow up.

Let's see Blanding... maybe you should consider leaving the State? I don't recall there being any fences with guards keeping you here. But wait...then you would have absolutely no access to all the 50K jobs, as Utah has them all! Hmmm. I don't get bigots that try to make arguments that are not based on fact, but simply a deluded concoction of a hate fevered mind. I don't have a 50K per year job. Unlike you I realize that it is due to my choices, not what anyone forced on me. I lived in Canada both in the East and in the West, most of my life, politics varied there as much as the religious groups that seemed to have the loudest voice. (I didn't have a problem with that.) From what I understand, the Boston area is predominantly Catholic. I would normally suggest maybe moving somewhere like there, but I have a feeling you aren't even Christian as Christians are supposed to "love their neighbors" (regardless of race, religion etc.) "as themselves." I don't recall Christ encouraging anyone to be a bigot.

Blanding,

Now you are talking "Moral Agents", who might these individuals be that you are referring too? Are they just as mysterious as the 50K government jobs? Tell me too, how are these moral agents screwing even one dime out of the government? You mean the Federal Government or State?
If you are going to convince me of anything other than that you are hateful, you need to have some facts to back up your words. Oh... and thanks for the bigoted name calling. Better get your facts about who, or what I am too before you have another bout of verbal diarrhea.

Get my facts straight? You didn't even read the article!

I guess screwing school children out of millions of dollars is alright with you. How Mormon of you! The Church™ got it's 10%, that justifies it.

I'm a fifth generation resident who was born here, maybe you should leave and give up your cushy government job punk.

It's funny to me that people think a 50K government job is a good job. I'm an ex-mormon, gay man in a federal job pulling in over 100K. It's not the religion and all, it's the skill and hard work. Nobody ever handed me anything and I have supported myself since I was 17 (33 years ago!)

Oh goody.. come on down to Blanding and tell every one you're gay! We'll see how far that gets you.
