It's not painless
Suicide is killing Utah National Guardsmen at five times the rate of combat. The Tribune's Matt LaPlante reports that two Utah soldiers have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, while 10 committed suicide. In the Army as a whole, at least 128 soldiers took their own lives in 2008 alone. Army Secretary Pete Geren says he has no answer for the rising number of suicides:
But we can tell you that across the Army, we're committed to doing everything we can to address the problem. The Army is calling for a 30-day stand-down this month to train soldiers to recognize behaviors that may lead to suicide.
