Short week long on benefits
The national newsletter of state government, Stateline, reports that although Utah's four-day workweek has not delivered the energy savings Gov. Jon Huntsman had hoped for (especially after gas prices toppled), it has been a success in unexpected ways. Six months into the program:
Employee satisfaction is way up, resulting in less turnover and absenteeism.

The three-day weekend has become a recruitment tool that attracts younger candidates to state jobs.

Utah saved $200,000 on custodial contracts.

Complaints from taxpayers who can’t get access to services on Fridays have tapered off to the point the call center might be shut down.

The $6 million that state employees are expected to save in commuting costs will be spent on goods and services — an economic stimulus.

Several other states are watching Utah and some have begun similar programs.

Government should be a company that we the people hire or fire to our convenience, not every for year.

If we State employees have a 4-day work week, why doesn't the Legislature? What did the Legislature do this past Saturday & Sunday;I didn't see anything in Sunday's or Monday's Trib. about their actions? Did they collect their per diem and hotel stipend? Why can they get a stipend and we employees have to turn in receipts for reimbursements? Why are 12 Saturdays and Sundays (especially Sundays for the 80 %% who are LDS) counted among the 45-days of the session? How much overtime is spent for State workers, who would be off Fridays-Saturdays-Sundays, supporting the legislature or are they required to take comp. time which puts a burden on co-workers? Or do they flex a work week which creates similar pressures? How many state employees are required to work Fridays thru Sundays to accommodate legislators? Why doesn't the Trib Capitol Hill GAng root this out?
