What is it with Utah's crybaby politicians?
If you pay even the barest attention to politics in this state you've had to endure conservative politicians turning on the waterworks at the drop of a hat. Former Rep. LaVar Christensen, for instance, could always be counted on to lose it on the House floor over some anti-abortion measure or highway repaving bill.
Newly elected Congressman Jason Chaffetz proved he's got what it takes to go far in Utah politics:

...and, I'd like to bear my testimony that Lincoln...
Ya, real emotion, what douchebags. Come on people, really?
Glad to see I am not the only one that cares about this country and Lincoln is a hero.
It shows courage to speak from you heart.
I am proud of you Jason.
Wow, I thought that we were supposed to encourage people to support good examples. A shame that we as a people have gone to throwing these ideals under foot and trashing that which is good.
We aren't "trashing that which is good," if you mean Lincoln or the great things he did. Hundreds of people spoke eloquently and powerfully about Lincoln in the last few days, all without crying. Tears are not always necessary to show conviction about our country or what Lincoln did.
And it isn't the crying alone that is funny. What is humorous is his voice sounds and his face looks like it's fast Sunday and he just got done telling his wife how much he loves her. Is this inappropriate? I don't know. I just find it funny.
No one is "trashing" Lincoln, for God's sake. What's open to ridicule here is the way Chaffetz treats this like a testimony meeting. I've seen countless Mo's do this when speaking in public: they use the EXACT same cadence in their speech, lean on the same limited vocabulary, turn on the waterworks at the appropriate moment, and stop just short of saying "I know this church is true." What does this tell us? That the people who do this lack depth, intelligence, and creative thought. That they rely on discourse that they think others might find appropriate. That they have trouble formulating an original idea--let alone communicating it. That they have had so much dogma pounded into their tiny brains, there isn't room for anything else. Welcome to Utah, folks: "I know this church is true!"
Fucking Liberals.....This is the only thing you can talk about while our country is crashing and we have a stupid ass for President who plays the Lincoln card himself, every chance he gets? Hey Barry Soetero, you sir, are no Abe Lincoln!
He started crying? What? How is this even possible? That was kinda awkward to watch
How interesting that the critical comments are all from "Anonymous" at this point. Glen, can you fix the anonymous posts to be more like SlashDot, and more honestly identify anonymous posts as "anonymous coward"?
Come on people. Have you ever tried to build something in your life? It's a lot easier to tear down, than to build up. At least have a bit of courage to id yourself with a handle, so we can tell if these post are all from the same person, or not.
Total and complete idiot. And it has little to do with this 'display' of emotion.
Simply precious! I just wanted to hug him and give him his own planet. Reminded me of Boehner weeping on the house floor a couple of years ago.
Glad to see I am not the only one that cares about this country and Lincoln is a hero.

I am proud of you Jason.
(I guess I said that already. It is still true).
Ah yes, let's mock Chaffetz for crying over the greatness of Lincoln. Classy, Glen.
Not only did the Bush years lead to the perception by some careless liberals that patriotism is to be mocked and derided in its more bombastic forms, but that small moments, like a Congressman crying at the wonderful example and life of Abe Lincoln, are to be derided. What a shame.
Dear Dave D:
I find your appeal to prevent anonymous posting disingenuous. Your name is Dave. Okay, now we have narrowed you down to roughly a billion people.
Now, what other information is provided. The initial D, which I can only assume is your last name.
But wait, there is more available. Click on Dave D's profile and name and what do we get? A notification that his profile and name are not available.
You are among the ranks of the "anonymous cowards." Watch how you label people, Mr. D. If that is your real name?
Not that getting choked up is a bad thing, mind you, but I've always wondered about the LDS propensity to wearing their hearts on their sleeves. I can certainly see how it seems to be more rhetorical flourish rather than real emotion--particularly when it happens monthly in Church. There are, no doubt, those who really do feel it and are moved to tears or being choked up, just as there are those who are faking it.
Is Chaffetz faking it? Is he a wussy for weeping over a man who despised Mormons? Time will tell.
Glad to have a real person representing me who loves this country. No one has a corner on deep feelings of patriotism. I've seen genuine displays of emotion from Bush W & Sr, Ronald Reagan, Carter, Clinton, and countless others. Focusing on Utah and the LDS church members as the only individuals who display their emotions freely is narrow minded.
You certainly have to admit, Nancy, that it is a rather unique attribute of the LDS culture--this crying at the drop of a name.
I'm not exactly sure why Chafetz, however, was so gushed up by Lincoln. Ever read his position on Mormons? The Extermination Order was just fine with Lincoln.
To this day I can scarcely get a word or two out without sobbing when I speak of my good friend, Charlamagne.
